INTRODUCTION
At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode - pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology. Come be a part of what’s next. We launched a new ad-supported tier in November 2022 and are building an in-house world-class ad tech ecosystem to offer our members more choices in consuming their content. Our new tier allows us to attract new members at a lower price point while also creating a compelling path for advertisers to reach deeply engaged audiences.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Our Team
The Ad Server Platform team sits within the Ad Serving & Decisioning org at Netflix Ads. We build and maintain the robust, scalable, and efficient ad serving infrastructure that forms the backbone of Netflix’s advertising ecosystem. Our mission is to ensure seamless and reliable delivery of ads across all platforms, devices, and viewing contexts. Our work spans the core services and frameworks that the broader Ads Platform depends on: supply-agnostic controls, policies, frequency caps, applying floor prices, ad podding rules, competitive separation, rule-based targeting, event processing, and the logging frameworks. We are looking for a distributed systems engineer with a platform mindset to build and scale infrastructure that multiple teams across the ads ecosystem depend on daily.
What You'll Do
- Build and operate the ad serving runtime: request orchestration, targeting evaluation, policy enforcement, and ad selection under strict latency SLAs
- Work closely with the programmatic team on infrastructure related to bid request/response handling, QPS management, and load shedding
- Build and evolve the rule engine framework: a unified execution framework for blocking policies, frequency caps, supply floors, ad podding rules, competitive separation, and ad load management
- Maintain and enhance APIs consuming upstream business objects, transforming them, and propagating updates to the ad server
- Improve and evolve the frequency management service
- Design logs, APIs and data contracts consumed by downstream teams
- Drive platform reliability: SLO-driven development, graceful degradation, circuit breakers, capacity planning, and incident response
- Instrument comprehensive logging, tracing, and telemetry across the ad request lifecycle
- Own the full software development lifecycle for your systems: design, implementation, deployment, operations, and deprecation
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 7+ years building distributed systems and backend services at scale
- Built or operated ad servers, SSPs, DSPs, or real-time bidding infrastructure
- Strong platform engineering mindset: APIs, contracts, backward compatibility, multi-team consumers
- Deep understanding of latency engineering: profiling, cache hierarchies, connection pooling, async I/O
- Experience designing highly available, fault-tolerant systems with strong understanding of concurrency, parallel processing, and microservices architecture
- Experience with event-driven architectures: Kafka, Flink, or similar stream processing
- Proficiency in Java, Kotlin, or similar JVM languages with a history of writing production-quality, well-tested code
- Understanding of ad serving concepts: targeting, frequency capping, publisher controls, programmatic protocols
- Ability to operate in an environment that is a mix of big-tech scale and startup speed
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with CTV constraints: server-side ad insertion, live event ad serving at scale (NFL-sized audiences)
- Multi-region deployment experience: active-active architectures, failover, and disaster recovery
- Chaos engineering or SRE practices: error budgets, game days, fault injection
- Built or improved logging and telemetry frameworks for high-throughput request pipelines

Tailor your resume to Netflix's tech stack
Netflix backend roles consistently require experience with Java, Python, and distributed systems at scale. Before applying, align your resume to their published engineering blog topics: chaos engineering, API gateways, and real-time data pipelines carry more weight than generic backend experience.
Target teams that file LCAs consistently
Not every Netflix engineering team sponsors visas at the same rate. Focus your outreach on infrastructure, platform, and streaming reliability teams, where international hiring has been most active. DOL LCA disclosure data lets you verify which job titles Netflix has historically sponsored.
Prepare for Netflix's systems design interview format
Netflix's backend interviews are heavily weighted toward distributed systems design, not just algorithms. Review their engineering blog for the types of problems their teams solve, then frame your answers around tradeoffs at scale rather than textbook patterns.
Use Migrate Mate to filter roles by visa type
Identifying which Backend Engineer openings at Netflix are actively open to sponsored candidates takes time. Use Migrate Mate to filter Netflix listings by your specific visa category so you apply to roles where sponsorship is already confirmed, not assumed.

Find Backend Engineer at Netflix JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Netflix sponsor H-1B visas for Backend Engineers?
Yes, Netflix sponsors H-1B visas for Backend Engineer roles. Because the H-1B is subject to an annual cap and lottery, Netflix typically files petitions in April for an October 1 start date. If you're already on H-1B status with another employer, a transfer is possible without waiting for the lottery, which makes mid-cycle hiring more straightforward.
How do I apply for Backend Engineer jobs at Netflix?
Apply directly through the Netflix careers portal. Before you do, review the job description closely for the specific team's technical focus, since backend roles at Netflix range from API infrastructure to data engineering. Tailor your application to the team's domain. You can also browse open roles filtered by visa type on Migrate Mate to confirm sponsorship eligibility before applying.
Which visa types does Netflix commonly sponsor for Backend Engineers?
Netflix sponsors H-1B, E-3 (for Australian citizens), TN (for Canadian and Mexican nationals), F-1 OPT and CPT, J-1, and employment-based Green Cards including EB-2 and EB-3. The right category depends on your citizenship and current immigration status. USCIS determines eligibility criteria for each, so confirming your category with an immigration attorney before your offer stage avoids delays.
What qualifications and experience does Netflix expect for Backend Engineer roles?
Netflix Backend Engineer roles typically require a bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. In practice, strong candidates show hands-on experience with large-scale distributed systems, proficiency in Java or Python, and comfort with microservices architecture. Netflix emphasizes judgment and ownership over years of experience, so demonstrating impact on complex systems matters more than tenure.
How do I think about visa timelines when targeting a Netflix Backend Engineer role?
Timeline depends on your visa category. H-1B transfers from an existing employer can happen year-round with no lottery wait, typically taking two to four months with standard USCIS processing. E-3 and TN visas can be obtained at a consulate or port of entry, sometimes within weeks of an offer. F-1 OPT requires USCIS to issue your EAD card, which can take three to five months from your DSO application date, so plan your job search accordingly.
