Align Your Credentials to IT Role Requirements
NC State IT Support roles often require specific certifications like CompTIA A+, Network+, or ITIL alongside a relevant degree. Confirm your foreign credentials are evaluated by a NACES-approved service before applying so hiring managers can quickly assess equivalency.
Target Roles Tied to Research Infrastructure
NC State's IT division supports large-scale research computing and academic systems. Focus your search on positions within university IT departments rather than college-specific units, as central IT roles tend to have clearer sponsorship pathways and more established HR processes.
Leverage OPT Early Before H-1B Season
If you are on F-1 OPT, time your NC State application so you receive an offer well before the April H-1B lottery registration window. Universities can file cap-exempt H-1B petitions, which removes lottery risk entirely for positions directly supporting institutional research or education.
Understand University Cap-Exempt H-1B Status
As a public research university, NC State qualifies as a cap-exempt H-1B employer with USCIS for roles tied to higher education functions. Confirm with the Office for International Services that your specific IT Support position meets the qualifying connection to academic or research activity.
Browse Open Roles Through Migrate Mate
Finding IT Support openings that explicitly support visa sponsorship at universities takes research. Use Migrate Mate to filter NC State IT roles by visa type so you apply only to positions already confirmed for sponsorship, saving time during an active job search.
Prepare for PERM Timelines if Pursuing a Green Card
If your goal is permanent residency through EB-2 or EB-3, discuss PERM labor certification timing early in the offer stage. DOL processing timelines run long, and starting that conversation at the offer stage rather than after onboarding keeps your pathway on track.

Find IT Support at North Carolina State University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does North Carolina State University sponsor H-1B visas for IT Supports?
Yes, NC State sponsors H-1B visas for IT Support roles. As a public research university, NC State qualifies as a cap-exempt employer with USCIS for positions connected to higher education or research, meaning your petition bypasses the annual lottery. The university's Office for International Services manages H-1B filings and works directly with hiring departments throughout the process.
How do I apply for IT Support jobs at North Carolina State University?
Applications go through NC State's official university jobs portal, where IT Support positions are listed under the technology or information systems categories. You can also use Migrate Mate to browse NC State IT Support openings filtered by visa sponsorship type. Tailor your resume to the specific technical environment described in each posting, as NC State's IT roles vary by department and infrastructure scope.
Which visa types does NC State commonly use for IT Support roles?
NC State sponsors H-1B, E-3, TN, J-1, and F-1 OPT and CPT for IT Support positions, along with immigrant pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 for long-term staff. TN visas are a practical option for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying IT roles. The right visa depends on your nationality, degree field, and the specific responsibilities of the position offered.
What qualifications does NC State expect for IT Support roles?
Most IT Support positions at NC State require a bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a closely related field, often paired with industry certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, or Microsoft certifications. Roles supporting research computing may also require familiarity with Linux environments or enterprise ticketing systems. For H-1B sponsorship, the role must meet USCIS specialty occupation criteria, so a direct degree-to-role match matters.
How do I manage visa timing during the NC State hiring process?
NC State's hiring process for IT Support roles typically moves through HR screening, technical interviews, and an offer stage before sponsorship paperwork begins. For H-1B transfers or new petitions, USCIS premium processing is available and shortens adjudication to around 15 business days. If you are on OPT with an expiring work authorization date, flag your timeline clearly during interviews so NC State's Office for International Services can coordinate filing deadlines alongside your start date.
