Essential Job Duties
This role is a key part of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) within the Randall B. Terry, Jr. Companion Animal Medical Center — the hospital’s 24/7 critical care hub. As an ICU technician, you’ll work hands-on with a wide variety of complex small animal and exotic cases, making this an exceptional opportunity to expand your technical skills in a high-acuity, team-driven environment.
In this position, you’ll play a direct role in delivering lifesaving care. You will triage, monitor, and treat critically ill and post-operative patients while collaborating closely with specialty services, clinicians, students, and fellow technicians. Your work may include advanced procedures such as catheter placement, transfusions, ventilator monitoring, anesthesia recovery, and emergency response (CPR). You’ll also manage precise medication dosing, use a range of monitoring and life-support equipment, and provide continuous observation for patients recovering from surgery or experiencing serious medical conditions.
Beyond patient care, you’ll contribute to the daily operations and teaching mission of the hospital. This includes accurate medical documentation, supporting client communication and visitation, and helping maintain a safe and compliant ICU environment. Teaching and mentoring students, interns, and residents is also an important part of the role. Occasional work beyond scheduled hours may be necessary to meet the needs of the service.
To thrive in this fast-paced setting, you’ll need strong teamwork, adaptability, clear communication, and excellent clinical judgment — especially under pressure. We’re looking for someone who values continuous learning, enjoys a collaborative environment, and is committed to compassionate, high-quality patient care.
Essential Job Duties
Provide high-level nursing care and close monitoring for ICU patients, including critical, surgical, and infectious cases.

Assist clinicians and students with diagnostics, anesthetic recovery, and emergency procedures.
Maintain meticulous patient records, follow infection control and safety protocols, and support training and mentorship of students and interns.
Safely lift up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations.

Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.

Strong ability to communicate clearly, compassionately, and professionally, even in emotionally challenging situations, while delivering excellent client service.
Collaborative team member who actively contributes to problem-solving and continuous improvement.
* Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and provide high-quality patient care, seeking support when needed.

Get Your Nursing Credentials Evaluated Early
If you trained outside the U.S., a credential evaluation from a NCSBN-approved body is required before NCLEX eligibility. Starting this process early prevents delays that can stall both your job offer and any visa petition timeline.
Target Campus Health and Student Services Roles
NC State's Student Health Services and campus occupational health units are the most active nursing hiring channels. Focusing your applications there improves your chances compared to broadly searching university-wide postings.
Confirm Sponsorship Scope Before Interviewing
NC State sponsors multiple visa types for nursing roles, but authorization varies by department budget and position type. Ask HR directly during early conversations which pathways apply to the specific role, not just the university generally.
Understand How LCA Filing Affects Your Start Date
Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application with DOL before an H-1B petition can be submitted to USCIS. At a large university, internal HR processing adds time, so factor at least several weeks into your expected start date.
Use Migrate Mate to Find Active Nursing Openings
Nursing roles at NC State fill through both public postings and internal channels. Use Migrate Mate to track current openings that are open to visa sponsorship, so you're applying to live roles rather than outdated listings.

Find Nursing at North Carolina State University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does North Carolina State University sponsor H-1B visas for Nursings?
Yes, North Carolina State University sponsors H-1B visas for nursing positions. As a large public research university and established H-1B employer, NC State has the institutional infrastructure to support petitions for qualifying nursing roles. Positions typically need to meet USCIS specialty occupation requirements, which nursing roles with a required bachelor's degree in nursing generally satisfy.
How do I apply for Nursing jobs at North Carolina State University?
Applications go through NC State's official HR portal at jobs.ncsu.edu. Filter by department or job family to find nursing-specific postings under Student Health Services or Environmental Health and Safety. You can also use Migrate Mate to browse open nursing roles at NC State that are flagged for visa sponsorship, which saves time filtering out positions that won't support international candidates.
Which visa types does North Carolina State University use for Nursing roles?
NC State supports several pathways for nursing hires, including the H-1B for specialty occupation roles, TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying nursing classifications, J-1 for exchange visitor appointments, and F-1 OPT or CPT for students in clinical training. Permanent residence pathways through EB-2 or EB-3 PERM labor certification are also available for longer-term positions.
What qualifications does NC State typically expect for sponsored Nursing positions?
Most sponsored nursing roles at NC State require a current RN license valid in North Carolina, along with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at minimum. Some campus health or specialty roles prefer candidates with a Master of Science in Nursing or a nurse practitioner credential. Relevant clinical experience in occupational health, primary care, or student health settings strengthens applications significantly.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Nursing role at NC State?
Timelines depend on visa type. An H-1B petition requires DOL to certify the Labor Condition Application first, which typically takes seven business days, followed by USCIS adjudication that can range from a few months to over six months without premium processing. TN status for eligible nationals can be obtained at the border same day. Build at least three to four months of runway into your job search to accommodate the full process.
