Verify your credentials meet Maryland licensing requirements
Johns Hopkins requires Maryland RN licensure before you can start. If your nursing degree is from outside the U.S., submit your transcripts to a CGFNS-approved credential evaluation service early. The evaluation process can take several months and must be complete before USCIS will approve an H-1B petition.
Target units with recurring international hiring patterns
Johns Hopkins Medical Center and Bayview campus consistently post openings in oncology, critical care, and perioperative nursing. Applying to these high-volume units improves your chances of reaching a hiring manager already familiar with the sponsorship process.
Understand the H-1B cap exemption for university employers
As a nonprofit educational institution, Johns Hopkins is cap-exempt. That means H-1B petitions for nursing roles can be filed any time of year without entering the annual lottery, so you're not restricted to the April registration window.
Use Migrate Mate to identify open nursing roles with sponsorship
Filter specifically for Johns Hopkins University nursing openings on Migrate Mate to see which positions are actively hiring and which visa types the university supports for that role, saving you time before you apply.
Prepare for PERM if pursuing permanent residence
For EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship, Johns Hopkins must run a supervised recruitment process through DOL before filing a PERM application. This takes 12 to 18 months on average. Ask HR during the offer stage whether they'll initiate PERM concurrently with your H-1B.
Clarify OPT or TN status before your start date
If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm your STEM extension eligibility with your DSO, since nursing degrees aren't always classified as STEM programs. TN status is available to Canadian and Mexican RNs and can be arranged at the border, but your offer letter must specify the nursing title exactly.

Find Nursing at Johns Hopkins University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Johns Hopkins University sponsor H-1B visas for Nursings?
Yes, Johns Hopkins University sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying nursing roles. Because the university is a nonprofit educational institution, it qualifies as a cap-exempt employer, meaning petitions can be filed year-round through USCIS without waiting for the annual H-1B lottery. You'll still need Maryland RN licensure and a CGFNS credential evaluation if your degree is from outside the United States before the petition can be approved.
How do I apply for Nursing jobs at Johns Hopkins University?
Applications go through Johns Hopkins' careers portal at jobs.jhu.edu, where nursing roles are listed by campus and specialty unit. Tailor your resume to the specific unit, since Johns Hopkins hiring managers distinguish between acute care, ambulatory, and research-focused roles. You can also browse current openings with visa sponsorship filters on Migrate Mate before submitting directly to the university.
Which visa types does Johns Hopkins University commonly use for Nursing roles?
H-1B is the most common pathway for internationally trained nurses at Johns Hopkins, and the university's cap-exempt status makes year-round filing possible. For permanent residence, the university has used EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship with PERM labor certification filed through DOL. F-1 OPT and TN visas are also accepted, though TN eligibility for nurses is limited to Canadian and Mexican citizens.
What qualifications does Johns Hopkins University expect for Nursing roles?
Most clinical nursing positions require an active Maryland RN license and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), though some specialized or research-facing roles prefer a Master's or DNP. For internationally trained nurses, CGFNS credential evaluation and passing the NCLEX-RN are standard requirements. Specialty units in oncology, critical care, or the operating room typically expect relevant certifications such as OCN, CCRN, or CNOR alongside clinical experience.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Nursing role at Johns Hopkins University?
For H-1B sponsorship, the standard USCIS processing window is 3 to 6 months after filing, with premium processing available to shorten that to 15 business days. Factor in time for credential evaluation and LCA certification with DOL before the petition is filed. If you're also pursuing PERM-based permanent residence, expect that process to add 12 to 18 months on top of your H-1B timeline.
