Get Your Credentials Evaluated Before Applying
International nursing degrees must be evaluated by a NACES-approved agency before Northwestern's HR team can assess your qualifications. Do this early since evaluations can take several weeks and are required before any visa filing begins.
Pass NCLEX Before Targeting Clinical Roles
Northwestern's clinical nursing positions require active Illinois RN licensure, which means passing NCLEX first. Without a valid state license, visa sponsorship cannot proceed, so treat licensure as a prerequisite rather than a parallel track.
Target Research and Academic Nursing Openings Separately
Northwestern employs nurses in research coordinator and faculty roles that sit outside hospital staffing pipelines. These postings appear through the Feinberg School of Medicine and are often more open to J-1 or E-3 sponsorship than bedside clinical positions.
Ask HR Directly About EB-3 Filing Timelines
Universities like Northwestern sometimes sponsor nurses through EB-3 PERM alongside an H-1B, but the PERM process typically takes 12 to 18 months or longer. Clarify during the offer stage whether the employer initiates both tracks concurrently or sequentially.
Use Migrate Mate to Find Open Nursing Roles
Northwestern regularly posts nursing openings across clinical and research functions. Use Migrate Mate to filter for Northwestern positions that have active visa sponsorship and sort by role type so you can focus your applications on the right track.
Confirm Your Visa Category Matches the Role Type
Northwestern sponsors multiple visa types, but not every category fits every nursing role. TN and E-3 are available to Canadian and Australian nationals respectively, while H-1B applies broadly. Confirm which category your offer letter reflects before signing, since this affects your filing timeline.

Find Nursing at Northwestern University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Northwestern University sponsor H-1B visas for Nursings?
Yes, Northwestern University sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying nursing roles, particularly clinical and research positions that meet the specialty occupation standard. The role must require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field, and you'll need an active Illinois RN license before USCIS can approve the petition. Northwestern's HR and legal teams typically manage this process internally.
How do I apply for Nursing jobs at Northwestern University?
Applications go through Northwestern's central jobs portal, but nursing postings also surface on Migrate Mate, where you can filter specifically for roles with visa sponsorship. Prepare your credential evaluation, NCLEX results, and Illinois RN license documentation before applying, since HR will request these early in the screening process for international candidates.
Which visa types does Northwestern University commonly use for Nursing roles?
Northwestern sponsors H-1B, E-3, TN, and J-1 visas for nursing positions, depending on your nationality and the role type. E-3 applies exclusively to Australian citizens and is often the fastest path for eligible candidates. TN applies to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying nursing occupations. EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visa sponsorship is available for longer-term positions, typically alongside a nonimmigrant filing.
What qualifications does Northwestern University expect for sponsored Nursing positions?
For clinical roles, you'll need an active Illinois RN license, a nursing degree evaluated by a NACES-approved agency, and in most cases a BSN or higher. Research and faculty nursing roles through the Feinberg School of Medicine often require a master's or doctoral degree. USCIS also requires that the position itself qualifies as a specialty occupation, which most degree-level nursing roles at a research university satisfy.
How do I time my application around the H-1B cap and filing deadlines?
The H-1B cap lottery opens in March each year for an October 1 start date, so you'll want an offer in hand by late February at the latest. Northwestern, as an educational institution affiliated with a nonprofit research organization, may qualify for cap-exempt H-1B filings in some cases, which would allow petitions to be filed year-round. Confirm cap-exempt status with the employer during the offer stage since this significantly changes your timeline.
