Get your NBCOT certification before applying
California requires OTs to hold a valid NBCOT certification and state licensure before starting work. Confirm your credentials are transferable or in process early, since visa petitions cannot move forward without verified licensure documentation.
Target SFUSD's special education pipeline directly
SFUSD hires OTs almost exclusively through its Special Education Department. Focus your application on IEP-related positions and highlight any school-based OT experience, since district hiring committees weight school versus clinical background heavily.
Use Migrate Mate to track open OT roles at SFUSD
School district job boards update inconsistently and often close roles without notice. Use Migrate Mate to monitor verified OT openings at SFUSD that confirm visa sponsorship, so you apply during active hiring windows rather than chasing stale listings.
Ask HR to initiate the LCA before your start date
SFUSD must file a Labor Condition Application with DOL before submitting your H-1B petition to USCIS. Request a clear timeline from the district's HR team early in the offer stage, since LCA certification alone typically takes seven to ten business days.
Plan around the academic calendar for offer timing
SFUSD hiring cycles align with the school year, meaning most OT offers extend between March and June for fall start dates. Aligning your H-1B petition filing with the April 1 USCIS cap-subject filing window is critical if you need cap-subject status.

Find OT at San Francisco Unified School District JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does San Francisco Unified School District sponsor H-1B visas for OTs?
Yes, San Francisco Unified School District sponsors H-1B visas for occupational therapists. As a large public school district, SFUSD qualifies as a cap-exempt employer under certain conditions, though applicants without prior H-1B status should confirm cap-subject versus cap-exempt eligibility directly with HR during the offer stage.
How do I apply for OT jobs at San Francisco Unified School District?
Applications are submitted through SFUSD's official careers portal. You'll need to attach your NBCOT certification, California OT licensure or proof of pending application, and a resume highlighting school-based experience. Migrate Mate lists verified OT openings at SFUSD that confirm visa sponsorship, which is a reliable way to identify active roles before applying directly.
Which visa types are commonly used for OT roles at San Francisco Unified School District?
H-1B is the most common visa type for OTs at SFUSD, since occupational therapy qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a related bachelor's degree or higher. TN visas are available to Canadian and Mexican nationals. F-1 OPT and CPT can cover early employment periods for recent graduates, with H-1B sponsorship following once OPT authorization ends.
What qualifications does San Francisco Unified School District expect from OT candidates?
SFUSD requires a master's degree in occupational therapy, current NBCOT certification, and an active California OT license issued by the California Board of Occupational Therapy. School-based experience, particularly working with pediatric populations on IEP goals, is weighted heavily. Bilingual candidates are a practical advantage given the district's student demographics.
How long does the H-1B sponsorship process take when working with SFUSD?
Once SFUSD issues an offer, the Labor Condition Application with DOL takes roughly seven to ten business days. USCIS then processes the H-1B petition, which runs three to five months under standard processing or two to four weeks with premium processing. Total timeline from offer to approved status typically falls between two and six months, depending on filing timing and processing load.
