INTRODUCTION
A company built to serve you. It's your career, Shelter it!
We are seeking an exceptional entrepreneur to make a difference in Elizabethton, TN and become our newest Shelter Insurance Agent.
• Do you have a desire to meet new people, develop new contacts, and become known in your community?
• Are you passionate about serving your community?
• Do you want to grow your sales, business, and networking skills to new heights?
• Would you like to do what you love and love what you do?
• Do you have a desire to control your own income?
• Have you wanted to start your own business but extreme start-up costs stopped you in your tracks?
If you answered “yes” to these questions, then you owe it to yourself to learn more about becoming a Shelter Insurance® Agent. At Shelter, we do not require a previous background in the insurance industry. While the experience is a plus, it is far from a necessity. Around half of our new Shelter Agents have never worked in insurance; our agents have backgrounds ranging from real estate and retail sales to education and coaching.
What is required? A motivated attitude, an entrepreneurial spirit, and skilled capacity for effectively communicating with clients in a sales atmosphere. While some sales experience & a degree with general business courses is helpful, our mix of in-house and virtual new agent training schools, paired with continuing industry education courses, helps you build the foundation necessary to launch your agency.
At Shelter we do not require prospective agents to have capital/assets on hand to be considered for an agency. We do not “sell” agencies and Shelter does not “loan” money to agents to begin their business. We provide the opportunity. The only expectations are that you meet sufficient sales requirements and core business proficiencies. If you are no longer a Shelter agent for any reason, your financial responsibilities are limited to any unsatisfied bills owed through your departure. This could include advertising contracts, telephone bills, and utilities.
A true business owner’s mindset is required to succeed! While developing prospects and selling Shelter products in your agency will be your main focus, you may also have the opportunity to bring on staff to help you perform general administrative duties and improve your sales.
If you possess a strong desire to be a business owner, a vigorous passion for helping people, and a desire to work for a company that strives to be a leader in its communities, then take the first steps to explore a partnership with Shelter Insurance Companies. Shelter has one of the top new-agent programs in the entire insurance industry, and if you are committed to hard work, we can help you launch your insurance sales career.

Frame your insurance sales credentials clearly
Before applying, document any licensed sales experience, territory management, or agency development work with specific outcomes. Shelter's business development roles require state insurance licensing, so having or being eligible for a Property and Casualty license strengthens your application significantly.
Target Shelter's regional expansion markets
Shelter primarily operates in the Midwest and South. Roles in markets where they're actively growing agent counts move faster through hiring. Research their current state footprint and apply to postings in underserved territories where headcount pressure is highest.
Ask about TN eligibility before H-1B discussions
If you're a Canadian or Mexican citizen, a TN visa can cover business development roles tied to management consulting or marketing functions and avoids the H-1B lottery entirely. Raise this with the recruiter early so Shelter's HR team can evaluate it with their immigration counsel.
Verify your OPT authorization covers sales roles
F-1 OPT authorization must align with your degree field. A business, marketing, or finance degree typically supports a Sales Business Development role classification at Shelter. Confirm with your DSO that your authorized employment category matches the job description before accepting an offer.
Find open roles using Migrate Mate
Shelter Insurance Companies posts Sales Business Development openings across multiple states. Use Migrate Mate to filter for Shelter roles that align with your visa type and location preferences, so you're applying to positions where sponsorship is a realistic outcome.

Find Sales Business Development at Shelter Insurance Companies JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Shelter Insurance Companies sponsor H-1B visas for Sales Business Developments?
Yes, Shelter Insurance Companies has sponsored H-1B visas for Sales Business Development roles. Because these positions involve structured territory management and agency development work, they can qualify as specialty occupations when tied to a relevant bachelor's degree. Your degree field, typically business, marketing, or finance, needs to align directly with the role description Shelter submits to USCIS.
How do I apply for Sales Business Development jobs at Shelter Insurance Companies?
Applications go through Shelter's careers portal, where business development postings are listed by state. You can also browse current openings on Migrate Mate, which filters Shelter's active roles by visa sponsorship eligibility. When you apply, flag your visa status early in the process so Shelter's recruiting team can loop in HR and confirm sponsorship availability for that specific role and location.
Which visa types does Shelter Insurance Companies typically use for Sales Business Development roles?
Shelter has sponsored H-1B visas for this function and accepts F-1 OPT and CPT candidates during their authorized periods. TN visas are also a viable path for Canadian and Mexican nationals whose degree and job duties align with covered USMCA professional categories. The right visa type depends on your citizenship, degree field, and where you are in your authorization timeline.
What qualifications does Shelter Insurance Companies expect for Sales Business Development candidates?
Shelter typically looks for candidates with a bachelor's degree in business, marketing, finance, or a related field, combined with demonstrated experience in sales, client acquisition, or agency management. State insurance licensing is often required or expected within a set onboarding period. Familiarity with independent agent distribution models or regional insurance markets is a meaningful differentiator in the hiring process.
How do I plan my timeline if I need Shelter to sponsor an H-1B for a Sales Business Development role?
USCIS runs the H-1B lottery in March, with approved workers able to start October 1. If you're finishing OPT, confirm your expiration date and calculate whether a cap-gap period covers any gap between OPT ending and an H-1B start date. Raise the sponsorship conversation with Shelter's recruiter before the offer stage so there's no delay in engaging their immigration counsel once you clear the lottery.
