TransCore (TCI) is seeking a full-time Technician III to join our Fiber team in Houston, Texas.
Summary: The Technician III performs precise fusion splicing of fiber optic cables, preparing fiber optic cables for splicing by stripping, cleaning, cleaving, and organizing fibers according to industry standards. They conduct comprehensive optical testing using OTDRs, Power Meter/Light Sources, Traffic Identifiers, and VFLs to verify splice quality, cable continuity, and network performance, as well as identifying and troubleshooting any defects or irregularities in the network.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Installation, preventive and corrective maintenance of equipment including Microsoft Windows and Linux-based hardware, video surveillance and detection equipment, radar/LIDAR/magnetic detection equipment, network communications equipment, and/or fiber optic/Wi-Fi/radio equipment.
- Using fusion splicers or mechanical methods to connect fiber strands; preparing and terminating cables in patch panels or splice enclosures.
- Operating equipment like fusion splicers, Optical Time Domain Reflectometers (OTDR), traffic identifiers, and power meters.
- Repairing damaged cable, performing "ring cuts," and replacing faulty equipment.
- Maintaining accurate records of splice maps, cable routing, and test results.
- Complete reports, logs and perform shift-to-shift communications in accordance with established policies, procedures and local practices.
- Work with technical team on advanced and intermittent technical issues.
- Respond to corrective maintenance requests or alarms within an acceptable time frame.
- Restore equipment to operational status as quickly as possible.
- Module or PC Board swap out.
- Isolation of faults in units or components.
- Field test of units or components.
- Maintenance of spare equipment and parts following guidelines set forth to do so.
- Responsible for training and providing technical support to less experienced technicians.
Requirements and Qualifications

- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) strongly preferred.
- Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience.
- Must maintain driver’s license in good standing as verified by TransCore. CDL a plus.

- On-call schedule, with some travel.
- Proven expertise in electronic toll collection systems, RFID, ANPR, and traffic management systems.
- Expert-level troubleshooting and repair skills for both hardware, software, and networking components.
- Deep knowledge of networking protocols (TCP/IP), system integrations, and communication systems.
- Strong leadership and project management abilities.
- Exceptional analytical skills with the ability to resolve complex technical challenges.
- Ability to develop and deliver technical training.
