Align your portfolio to academic communications
Berkeley's Communications roles often involve faculty spotlights, research storytelling, and institutional messaging. Tailor your portfolio samples to show experience with long-form editorial content, press materials, or science communication rather than consumer brand work.
Target roles posted through UCB's official careers site
Berkeley routes sponsored hires through its central HR system. Filter for Communications positions on the UC Berkeley jobs portal directly, as department-level postings sometimes appear there before aggregators pick them up, giving you an earlier application window.
Understand Berkeley's H-1B petition timeline
As a cap-exempt employer, Berkeley can file H-1B petitions year-round without waiting for the annual lottery. That means your start date isn't locked to October 1, and you won't lose an offer to a random selection process the way you would with a private employer.
Prepare your credentials for specialty occupation documentation
USCIS requires that Communications roles qualify as specialty occupations. A degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a directly related field strengthens your petition. If your degree is from outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation completed before interviews begin.
Ask HR explicitly about the LCA and filing process
Once you have an offer, Berkeley's international office handles the Labor Condition Application with DOL before petitioning USCIS. Confirm with HR which office manages the process and expected timelines so you can plan your start date accurately.
Browse open roles on Migrate Mate before applying directly
Use Migrate Mate to identify current Communications openings at Berkeley that are flagged for visa sponsorship. It helps you confirm active postings and cross-reference sponsorship history before you invest time in tailoring your application materials.

Find Communications at University of California Berkeley JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of California Berkeley sponsor H-1B visas for Communications roles?
Yes. University of California Berkeley is a cap-exempt employer, which means it can sponsor H-1B visas for Communications roles at any time of year without entering the annual lottery. This is a significant advantage over private-sector employers. Sponsorship is handled through the Berkeley International Office in coordination with the hiring department, and eligibility depends on the role qualifying as a specialty occupation under USCIS standards.
How do I apply for Communications jobs at University of California Berkeley?
Applications go through UC Berkeley's official jobs portal at jobs.berkeley.edu. Search by department or job category to find Communications openings. Each listing specifies required materials, which typically include a resume, cover letter, and writing samples. If you need visa sponsorship, you can indicate that during the application process. You can also browse actively sponsored Communications postings on Migrate Mate before applying directly through the university's portal.
Which visa types does University of California Berkeley use for Communications professionals?
Berkeley most commonly sponsors H-1B visas for Communications professionals in roles that meet the specialty occupation threshold. For longer-term employees pursuing permanent residence, the university can support EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card petitions through the PERM labor certification process. The appropriate visa category depends on your role, qualifications, and immigration goals, which Berkeley's International Office can advise on after you receive an offer.
What qualifications does Berkeley look for in Communications candidates?
Most Communications roles at Berkeley require a bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a closely related field. Senior roles often expect experience in higher education, research institutions, or mission-driven organizations. Strong writing skills are consistently prioritized, and roles in digital or media communications may also require experience with content management systems, social media strategy, or multimedia production. A portfolio demonstrating institutional or editorial work carries significant weight.
How long does the H-1B sponsorship process take at Berkeley?
Because Berkeley is cap-exempt, it can file your H-1B petition immediately after the Labor Condition Application is certified by DOL, which typically takes seven business days under standard processing. USCIS standard adjudication for a new H-1B petition runs several months, but premium processing is available and reduces USCIS review to 15 business days. Plan for at least two to four months from offer to authorization if you use premium processing, and longer under standard timelines.
