Overview
The Clinical Nurse is responsible for providing total comprehensive nursing to patients and their families through the implementation of a plan of care. The plan is based upon the patient's developmental and health care needs identified through the assessment of the patient's physical, psychological, socioeconomic status, and physician orders regarding care, treatment, and education. The Clinical Nurse understands the needs of the organization and supports the mission, values, and management of patient care services. The Clinical Nurse actively supports and incorporates ANA Scope and Standards of Nursing Practice, North Carolina Board of Nursing Practice Act, WakeMed's Division of Nursing Professional Practice model, and WakeMed's Patient & Family Centered Care (PFCC) model. The four key concepts of PFCC are: Dignity and Respect = Listen to and honor patient and family perspectives and choices; Information Sharing = Communicate and share complete and unbiased information with patients and families in ways that are affirming and useful; Participation = Patients and families are encouraged and supported in participating in care and decision-making at the level they choose; Collaboration = Patients and families and the Clinical Nurse collaborate in the delivery of care.

Tips for Finding Clinical Assistant Jobs at WakeMed
Verify Your Credentials Meet State Requirements
North Carolina requires specific certifications for clinical support roles. Confirm your credentials, such as a CNA or medical assistant certification, are recognized by the NC Medical Board before applying. A credential gap can stall sponsorship paperwork even after an offer.
Target WakeMed Campuses With Active Openings
WakeMed operates multiple facilities across the Raleigh area, and hiring volume for Clinical Assistants shifts by campus and department. Focus your applications on locations actively listing openings rather than submitting a general interest application to the health system broadly.
Understand How TN Status Applies to This Role
TN visa eligibility for Clinical Assistants depends on whether your specific job duties align with an approved USMCA occupational category. Confirm with WakeMed's HR that your role qualifies before assuming TN is an available path alongside H-1B.
Clarify Sponsorship Timing at the Offer Stage
Ask WakeMed's HR team directly whether they file H-1B petitions in the annual April lottery or under cap-exempt provisions. Knowing this determines whether you're looking at a six-month wait or a faster timeline after your offer is signed.
Use Migrate Mate to Find Sponsored Clinical Roles
Filter for Clinical Assistant positions at WakeMed that list visa sponsorship using Migrate Mate. This saves time compared to manually scanning job boards and helps you identify which specific departments or campuses are actively hiring sponsored candidates.
Align Your OPT or CPT Start Date With Shift Scheduling
WakeMed's Clinical Assistant positions often involve rotating shifts. When your F-1 OPT or CPT authorization is pending, coordinate your USCIS-approved employment start date with WakeMed's scheduling team to avoid a gap in authorized work before your first shift.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does WakeMed sponsor H-1B visas for Clinical Assistants?
Yes, WakeMed sponsors H-1B visas for Clinical Assistant roles. As a large healthcare system, WakeMed has filed H-1B petitions for clinical support positions and has experience working with international candidates through the full petition process. You should confirm sponsorship availability directly with WakeMed's HR team during the interview process, as sponsorship decisions can depend on the specific department and role level.
How do I apply for Clinical Assistant jobs at WakeMed?
Apply through WakeMed's careers portal at wakemed.org, where Clinical Assistant openings are listed by facility and department. You can also browse sponsorship-verified openings on Migrate Mate, which filters for roles where WakeMed has a history of supporting international candidates. Tailor your application to the specific unit you're targeting, whether that's emergency services, surgical support, or outpatient care.
Which visa types does WakeMed commonly use for Clinical Assistant roles?
WakeMed supports several visa categories for Clinical Assistants, including H-1B for specialty occupation roles, F-1 OPT and CPT for students currently enrolled or recently graduated, and TN visa for eligible Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying occupational categories. For candidates seeking permanent residence, WakeMed has pursued EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship for clinical support staff, though eligibility depends on your specific qualifications and role.
What qualifications does WakeMed expect for Clinical Assistant positions?
WakeMed typically requires a high school diploma or GED at minimum, with preference for candidates who hold a Certified Nursing Assistant certification or have completed a medical assistant program. Patient care experience in a hospital or clinical setting strengthens your application significantly. Some units, particularly surgical or ICU support roles, expect prior hands-on experience with vital signs, phlebotomy, or electronic health record systems such as Epic.
How long does the sponsorship and hiring process typically take at WakeMed?
From offer acceptance to work authorization, timelines vary by visa type. H-1B petitions filed in the April lottery take several months before an October 1 start date. OPT authorization from USCIS takes up to 90 days, so apply early. For PERM-based Green Card sponsorship, the DOL labor certification process alone can take 12 months or more, so that pathway is better suited for candidates already working at WakeMed.
