Verify Your Medical Credentials Transfer Correctly
Foreign medical degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency before WakeMed can proceed with credentialing. Confirm your ECFMG certification is current and that your residency training is recognized by ACGME, since WakeMed's medical staff office will require both before extending an offer.
Target Specialties With Active Recruitment Cycles
WakeMed regularly recruits for hospital-based and outpatient Physician roles across its Raleigh and surrounding campuses. Focus your search on specialties where health systems face persistent shortages, such as hospitalist medicine, emergency medicine, and primary care, as these are most likely to carry sponsorship flexibility.
Browse Open Physician Roles Using Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter WakeMed's current Physician openings by visa type so you only apply to roles where sponsorship is confirmed. This saves time you'd otherwise spend chasing recruiters for answers that should come before the application.
Clarify H-1B Cap Exemption Status Early
WakeMed, as a nonprofit health system affiliated with medical education, may qualify as a cap-exempt employer under USCIS rules. Ask the recruiting team directly whether your position qualifies, since cap-exempt filing means no lottery and no annual October start date constraint.
Understand the PERM Timeline Before Negotiating Your Contract
If WakeMed pursues a Green Card through PERM labor certification via DOL, the process typically takes two or more years from filing. Build that timeline into your employment contract discussions, particularly around job duty stability requirements that PERM imposes on both you and the employer.
Prepare State Licensure Documents Before the Offer Stage
North Carolina requires full medical licensure before you can practice at WakeMed. Start the North Carolina Medical Board application as soon as you have a credible offer in progress, since licensure processing can take several months and delays here directly delay your start date and visa filing.

Does WakeMed sponsor H-1B visas for Physicians?
Yes, WakeMed sponsors H-1B visas for Physician roles. Because WakeMed is a nonprofit health system with medical education affiliations, it may qualify as a cap-exempt employer under USCIS rules, meaning sponsored Physicians could be exempt from the annual H-1B lottery. Confirm cap-exempt status directly with WakeMed's recruitment or human resources team, since eligibility depends on the specific position and department.
How do I apply for Physician jobs at WakeMed?
You can browse current Physician openings at WakeMed through Migrate Mate, which filters roles by visa sponsorship type so you can identify confirmed sponsorship opportunities before applying. Applications typically go through WakeMed's careers portal, where you'll complete an initial screening before connecting with a physician recruiter. Having your ECFMG certification and state licensure documentation ready speeds up the credentialing review that follows any offer.
Which visa types does WakeMed commonly use for Physician roles?
WakeMed sponsors H-1B visas for Physicians most frequently. For longer-term employment, the organization also supports immigrant visa pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship, which typically require PERM labor certification through the Department of Labor. TN visa holders who are Canadian or Mexican citizens working in qualifying medical roles may also be eligible depending on the position.
What qualifications does WakeMed expect for sponsored Physician positions?
WakeMed requires completion of an accredited residency program recognized by ACGME, active or pending North Carolina medical licensure, and board certification or eligibility in your specialty. International medical graduates must hold valid ECFMG certification. Some roles, particularly subspecialty or surgical positions, also require fellowship training. Credentialing through WakeMed's medical staff office is a separate process from hiring and runs in parallel with any visa filing.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a WakeMed Physician role?
H-1B processing through USCIS takes roughly three to six months with standard processing, or two to four weeks with premium processing. If WakeMed pursues a Green Card through PERM, the DOL labor certification stage alone can take one to two years before an immigrant visa petition is even filed. Factor in North Carolina licensure timelines alongside visa processing, since both must align before your start date is confirmed.
