Verify your ECFMG certification before applying
Boston Medical Center, like all U.S. hospital systems, requires ECFMG certification for international medical graduates before extending a Physician offer. Confirm your certification is current and matches the name on your visa documents to avoid delays during credentialing.
Target BMC's residency and fellowship pipeline
Boston Medical Center regularly converts Physicians from its own residency and fellowship programs into attending roles. If you're completing training at a Boston University-affiliated program, you're already inside the hiring funnel most sponsored Physicians use to land an offer.
Understand how H-1B cap exemptions apply here
As a nonprofit teaching hospital affiliated with Boston University School of Medicine, Boston Medical Center qualifies as a cap-exempt employer. That means H-1B petitions can be filed at any time of year, bypassing the annual lottery that blocks most employers.
Align your specialty with documented workforce shortages
BMC serves a high-need urban patient population with documented gaps in primary care, psychiatry, and internal medicine. Targeting your application toward these departments strengthens the employer's case with DOL during the Labor Condition Application process.
Use Migrate Mate to identify open Physician roles at BMC
Physician openings at large academic medical centers fill quickly and don't always surface on general job boards. Use Migrate Mate to filter for Physician positions at Boston Medical Center that have active visa sponsorship, so you're applying to confirmed opportunities.
Prepare your J-1 waiver documentation early if applicable
If you're on a J-1 visa completing a residency or fellowship, you'll need a waiver before BMC can file an H-1B on your behalf. Conrad 30 and USCIS interested government agency waivers can take several months, so start the process well before your program ends.

Find Physician at Boston Medical Center JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Boston Medical Center sponsor H-1B visas for Physicians?
Yes. Boston Medical Center sponsors H-1B visas for Physicians and does so as a cap-exempt employer, meaning it is not subject to the annual H-1B lottery. Petitions can be filed at any point during the year, which makes the sponsorship process more predictable than at for-profit employers. International medical graduates completing training at BMC-affiliated programs are commonly sponsored through this pathway.
Which visa types does Boston Medical Center use for Physician roles?
Boston Medical Center primarily sponsors H-1B visas for Physicians in clinical roles. For Physicians pursuing long-term employment and permanent residence, BMC also supports EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visa petitions through the PERM labor certification process. Physicians with exceptional credentials in research or academic medicine may also explore O-1 or EB-1 pathways, though PERM-based sponsorship is the most common route for clinical faculty.
How do I apply for Physician jobs at Boston Medical Center?
Physician roles at Boston Medical Center are posted through the BMC careers portal and through academic medical job boards. Many sponsored Physician positions are filled through internal pipelines from residency and fellowship programs affiliated with Boston University School of Medicine. To find currently open Physician roles at BMC that include confirmed visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate to filter by employer and role type before applying directly through BMC's official careers site.
What qualifications does Boston Medical Center expect for sponsored Physician positions?
Boston Medical Center requires board certification or board eligibility in the relevant specialty, along with an active or pending Massachusetts medical license. International medical graduates must hold valid ECFMG certification. For academic or research-focused Physician roles, BMC typically expects a record of peer-reviewed publications or grant funding. Candidates coming from J-1 training programs must have a valid waiver before an H-1B petition can be filed.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Physician offer at Boston Medical Center?
Because BMC is cap-exempt, the H-1B petition can be filed as soon as the offer is confirmed and the Labor Condition Application is certified by DOL, which typically takes seven to ten business days. USCIS standard processing for a cap-exempt H-1B petition runs two to four months. If you need an earlier start date, BMC's legal team can request premium processing, which reduces the USCIS adjudication window to around fifteen business days.
