Job Summary
INVESTIGATOR IN THE BASIC NEUROSCIENCE DIVISION (BND)
AT MCLEAN HOSPITAL
The Department of Psychiatry at Mass General Brigham (MGB) and Harvard Medical School (HMS) invite applications for a full-time faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level from qualified individuals engaged in basic, preclinical systems neuroscience research aimed to improve understanding of the pathophysiology and treatment of neuropsychiatric, neurodevelopmental or substance use disorders.
The position is based at McLean Hospital, a private psychiatric hospital with the largest research program of its kind in the United States. The preclinical research community at McLean offers basic, cell, molecular, and systems neuroscience approaches, complementing neuroimaging, translational and clinical neuroscience targeting a variety of conditions, including (but not limited to) mood and anxiety disorders, drug- and alcohol-related substance use disorders, eating disorders, developmental disorders (e.g., autism), and neurodegenerative disorders (e.g., Alzheimer's disease).
We seek an investigator with a track record of innovation and excellence in basic systems neuroscience research, with particular emphasis on how whole-body effectors (neurosteroids, inflammatory cytokines) and endogenous regulatory systems (e.g., endocannabinoids) modify responses to stress, as well as experience with participating in translational collaborations that bridge the gap between studies in animal models and in humans. Opportunities exist for developing strong collaborations within McLean Hospital and across the MGB and HMS systems.
Qualifications
Applicants must have a Ph.D. and/or M.D. or professional doctorate, appropriate postdoctoral experience, and a record of extramural funding and publications indicative of demonstrated expertise.
Candidates must either meet the academic criteria for appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. The position offers affiliation with a large clinical and basic neuroscience research program and research infrastructure support. Salary and recruitment package in accordance with Hospital policies, and a Harvard Medical School appointment at the academic rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor (full or part-time) will be contingent on meeting the requirements for an HMS appointment and candidate qualifications, including a Massachusetts medical license and being board-certified/board-eligible.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop and/or maintain a competitive, independent, and largely externally funded research program and engage in supervision, training, and educational activities that support their program while enriching the MGB and HMS communities.
All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply and should submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, and a concise statement of research interests. Materials should be submitted by email (bcarlezon@mclean.harvard.edu) but addressed to:

Confirm your medical credentials transfer correctly
ECFMG certification is a prerequisite for foreign medical graduates before any U.S. employer can sponsor you. Verify your credentials are fully verified and your USMLE steps are complete before reaching out to Mass General Brigham recruiters.
Target departments with fellowship pipeline history
Mass General Brigham consistently recruits Physicians through its residency and fellowship programs at MGH and Brigham and Women's Hospital. Completing training within the system puts you on the internal hiring path, where H-1B sponsorship is already built into the workflow.
Search verified sponsoring physician roles on Migrate Mate
Not every Physician posting at Mass General Brigham explicitly mentions visa sponsorship. Use Migrate Mate to filter for roles where the organization has an active H-1B sponsorship track record for this specific position type.
Clarify cap-exempt status before your H-1B filing
Mass General Brigham qualifies as a cap-exempt employer because of its affiliation with nonprofit research and teaching hospitals. That means your H-1B petition can be filed at any point in the year, bypassing the April lottery window entirely.
Negotiate start date around USCIS processing timelines
Standard H-1B processing runs three to six months. When you receive an offer, align your proposed start date with realistic USCIS adjudication windows so neither you nor the hiring team is waiting on an unresolved petition to begin the role.
Understand how state medical licensure affects your filing
Massachusetts requires a state medical license before you practice, and USCIS expects evidence of licensure eligibility in the H-1B petition. Start the Board of Registration in Medicine application early since delays there can push back your entire sponsorship timeline.

Does Mass General Brigham sponsor H-1B visas for Physicians?
Yes, Mass General Brigham sponsors H-1B visas for Physician roles. As a nonprofit academic medical system affiliated with Harvard Medical School, it qualifies as a cap-exempt H-1B employer. That means petitions can be filed year-round without entering the annual lottery, which is a meaningful advantage for internationally trained doctors on time-sensitive immigration situations.
How do I apply for Physician jobs at Mass General Brigham?
Physician roles are posted through the Mass General Brigham careers portal, and many positions are also listed on Migrate Mate, where you can filter specifically for roles with confirmed H-1B sponsorship history. For academic and subspecialty positions, direct outreach to department chiefs or division recruitment coordinators is common and often expected alongside a formal application.
Which visa types are commonly used for Physician roles at Mass General Brigham?
H-1B is the primary visa used to sponsor Physicians at Mass General Brigham. J-1 visas are also common during residency and fellowship training, though a J-1 waiver is required before transitioning to H-1B employment if you have a two-year home residency requirement attached to your J-1. Some Physicians also pursue O-1A classification if they have an exceptional publication or research record.
What qualifications does Mass General Brigham expect for Physician candidates requiring sponsorship?
Foreign medical graduates need ECFMG certification, completed residency training in their specialty, and board certification or eligibility. Massachusetts state medical licensure is also required before practicing, and USCIS expects documentation of license eligibility in the H-1B petition. For subspecialty and academic roles, fellowship training and a research or publication record are typically expected alongside clinical qualifications.
How long does the H-1B sponsorship process take for Physicians at Mass General Brigham?
Because Mass General Brigham is cap-exempt, the H-1B petition can be filed as soon as both parties are ready, without waiting for an April filing window. Standard USCIS adjudication runs three to six months from filing. Premium processing is available and reduces that to roughly 15 business days, which many academic medical employers use when a start date is time-sensitive.
