Job Summary
INVESTIGATOR IN THE BASIC NEUROSCIENCE DIVISION (BND)
AT MCLEAN HOSPITAL
The Department of Psychiatry at Mass General Brigham (MGB) and Harvard Medical School (HMS) invite applications for a full-time faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level from qualified individuals engaged in basic, preclinical systems neuroscience research aimed to improve understanding of the pathophysiology and treatment of neuropsychiatric, neurodevelopmental or substance use disorders.
The position is based at McLean Hospital, a private psychiatric hospital with the largest research program of its kind in the United States. The preclinical research community at McLean offers basic, cell, molecular, and systems neuroscience approaches, complementing neuroimaging, translational and clinical neuroscience targeting a variety of conditions, including (but not limited to) mood and anxiety disorders, drug- and alcohol-related substance use disorders, eating disorders, developmental disorders (e.g., autism), and neurodegenerative disorders (e.g., Alzheimer's disease).
We seek an investigator with a track record of innovation and excellence in basic systems neuroscience research, with particular emphasis on how whole-body effectors (neurosteroids, inflammatory cytokines) and endogenous regulatory systems (e.g., endocannabinoids) modify responses to stress, as well as experience with participating in translational collaborations that bridge the gap between studies in animal models and in humans. Opportunities exist for developing strong collaborations within McLean Hospital and across the MGB and HMS systems.
Qualifications
Applicants must have a Ph.D. and/or M.D. or professional doctorate, appropriate postdoctoral experience, and a record of extramural funding and publications indicative of demonstrated expertise.
Candidates must either meet the academic criteria for appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. The position offers affiliation with a large clinical and basic neuroscience research program and research infrastructure support. Salary and recruitment package in accordance with Hospital policies, and a Harvard Medical School appointment at the academic rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor (full or part-time) will be contingent on meeting the requirements for an HMS appointment and candidate qualifications, including a Massachusetts medical license and being board-certified/board-eligible.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop and/or maintain a competitive, independent, and largely externally funded research program and engage in supervision, training, and educational activities that support their program while enriching the MGB and HMS communities.
All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply and should submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, and a concise statement of research interests. Materials should be submitted by email (bcarlezon@mclean.harvard.edu) but addressed to:

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Medical Doctor Jobs at Mass General Brigham Jobs
Verify Your Credentials Through ECFMG First
Mass General Brigham requires ECFMG certification for internationally trained physicians before any offer can proceed. Get your medical degree verified and USMLE steps completed early. Incomplete credentialing is the most common reason physician hiring stalls at this stage.
Target Departments With Fellowship Pipelines
Many Mass General Brigham physician hires come from their own fellowship programs. If you're a fellow at MGH, Brigham and Women's, or a network affiliate, your department is already familiar with sponsoring your status. Internal candidates face significantly less friction in the H-1B process.
Browse Open Roles Using Migrate Mate
Search for Medical Doctor openings at Mass General Brigham on Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for visa-sponsoring employers. You can identify active roles across the hospital network before applying directly through their careers portal.
Confirm Specialty Occupation Status With Your Recruiter
USCIS requires H-1B petitions to demonstrate specialty occupation status. For physicians, your specific role, board certification field, and job duties all factor in. Ask Mass General Brigham's HR team early whether your subspecialty has been petitioned before to avoid late-stage filing issues.
Account for Cap-Exempt Filing Advantages
Mass General Brigham affiliates often qualify as cap-exempt employers under USCIS rules due to their affiliation with research and higher education. This means H-1B petitions can be filed year-round without waiting for the April lottery, which significantly shortens your path to a start date.
Time Your Application Around Residency Completion
If you're completing a residency or fellowship in the U.S., your program's end date determines when your new H-1B status must be active. Coordinate with Mass General Brigham's immigration team at least six months before your program ends to avoid any gap in authorized work status.

Find Medical Doctor at Mass General Brigham JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Mass General Brigham sponsor H-1B visas for Medical Doctors?
Yes, Mass General Brigham sponsors H-1B visas for Medical Doctors. The organization has an established process for physician immigration filings and works with in-house immigration counsel to manage petitions. Because many of its affiliates qualify as cap-exempt institutions, petitions can often be filed outside the standard H-1B lottery window, which benefits physicians transitioning from training programs.
How do I apply for Medical Doctor jobs at Mass General Brigham?
You can find and apply for Medical Doctor roles through Mass General Brigham's official careers portal, or browse visa-sponsoring openings on Migrate Mate before applying directly. Most physician roles require ECFMG certification, relevant board eligibility or certification, and a current CV tailored to U.S. academic medicine standards. Fellowship or residency experience within the MGH or Brigham system strengthens your application considerably.
Which visa types are commonly used for Medical Doctor roles at Mass General Brigham?
The H-1B is the primary visa used for physician hires at Mass General Brigham. For physicians completing J-1-sponsored residencies or fellowships, a J-1 waiver is often required before an H-1B can be filed. Some physicians also pursue O-1 visas if they have significant research publications or academic distinctions. Green Card sponsorship through the EB-2 or EB-1B categories is available for longer-term hires.
What qualifications and experience does Mass General Brigham expect for Medical Doctor roles?
Mass General Brigham expects candidates to hold an M.D. or D.O. degree from an accredited institution, ECFMG certification for international graduates, and completed residency training in the relevant specialty. Board certification or active board eligibility is required for most clinical positions. Academic medicine roles often expect research output or teaching experience. Subspecialty fellows completing training within the MGH or Brigham network have a structural advantage in the hiring process.
How long does the H-1B sponsorship process take for physicians at Mass General Brigham?
Because many Mass General Brigham entities are cap-exempt, H-1B petitions can be filed at any time rather than waiting for the April 1 filing window. USCIS standard processing takes three to five months. Premium processing reduces this to roughly two to three weeks. Plan to begin coordinating with the hospital's HR and immigration team at least six months before your intended start date to allow time for credentialing, offer finalization, and petition preparation.
