We know how important it is to recruit and retain exceptional staff and faculty to execute our mission. We’re passionate about health equity: for the communities we serve, for our patients and for our employees. We know that the South and West Sides of Chicago have historically been underserved. As a result, there is a 16-year gap in the life expectancy of someone in Chicago’s Loop versus someone in Chicago’s West Side. As part of our Anchor Mission strategy, we hire, invest, buy and source, and volunteer locally. We’ve invested more than $6 million on the West Side since 2018, and that number continues to grow every year. And, of course, we continue to provide excellent patient care for everyone who comes to Rush.

Tips for Finding Physician Jobs at Rush University Medical Center
Verify your ECFMG certification before applying
Rush requires ECFMG certification for international medical graduates before credentialing can begin. Get this completed well in advance of any application, since delays here stall the entire hiring and visa filing timeline.
Target subspecialty roles in underserved departments
Rush is an academic medical center with active residency and fellowship programs, so subspecialty and academic-track Physician openings tend to attract stronger institutional sponsorship support than general hospitalist roles with broader candidate pools.
Distinguish J-1 waiver paths from H-1B filing early
Many international Physicians entering the U.S. complete J-1 residencies and need a waiver before switching to H-1B status. Rush has experience with both paths, so clarify with HR which applies to your situation before your first interview.
Align your board certification timeline with the offer
Rush typically requires board certification or active candidacy for Physician roles. If you're mid-certification cycle, confirm with the hiring department whether candidacy status satisfies credentialing requirements during the H-1B petition period.
Confirm PERM eligibility before accepting immigrant visa sponsorship
For EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship, Rush must complete PERM labor certification through DOL. Understand that PERM recruitment must demonstrate no qualified U.S. workers are available, which affects both timing and your negotiating position.
Browse open Physician roles on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate lets you filter Physician openings at Rush University Medical Center by visa type, so you can identify which specific roles align with your H-1B, TN, or OPT status before investing time in a full application.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Rush University Medical Center sponsor H-1B visas for Physicians?
Yes, Rush University Medical Center sponsors H-1B visas for Physician roles. As an academic medical center, Rush qualifies as a cap-exempt H-1B employer, meaning it can file petitions year-round without being subject to the annual H-1B lottery. This is a significant practical advantage for international Physicians who need predictable timelines and cannot wait for a lottery selection cycle.
How do I apply for Physician jobs at Rush University Medical Center?
You can browse current Physician openings at Rush University Medical Center through Migrate Mate, which filters roles by visa sponsorship eligibility so you can identify positions that match your immigration status. Applications typically go through Rush's careers portal, where you'll submit your CV, cover letter, and board certification documentation. Academic and subspecialty roles often involve a department-level review before a formal HR interview.
Which visa types does Rush University Medical Center commonly use for Physician roles?
Rush sponsors H-1B, J-1 visa, TN visa (for Canadian and Mexican physicians), F-1 OPT, and both EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visa categories for Physicians. J-1 visa is common for residents and fellows, while H-1B is the standard route for attending-level roles. For permanent residency, Rush has supported EB-2 National Interest Waiver petitions for academic physicians with research profiles, in addition to employer-sponsored PERM-based green card filings.
What qualifications does Rush University Medical Center expect from Physician applicants?
Rush expects U.S. medical licensure in Illinois or demonstrated eligibility, ECFMG certification for international medical graduates, and board certification or active candidacy in your specialty. For academic Physician roles, a research background or fellowship training is typically expected. Subspecialty roles in departments with active clinical trial programs may also weigh teaching and publication records during the candidate review process.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Physician role at Rush?
For H-1B filings, USCIS standard processing runs three to five months, though Rush can request premium processing to reduce this to 15 business days. J-1 waiver processing through a state health agency or federal program typically adds three to six months before an H-1B petition can be filed. For PERM-based Green Card sponsorship, plan for a multi-year process depending on your country of birth and the applicable priority date backlog.
