Tips for Finding Medical Doctor Jobs at WakeMed
Verify Your Medical Credentials Match WakeMed's Standards
WakeMed requires ECFMG certification for internationally trained physicians before any credentialing or privileging process begins. Confirm your medical degree, residency completion, and board eligibility are fully documented before applying, as incomplete credentials stall sponsorship timelines significantly.
Target Departments With Recurring Physician Openings
WakeMed consistently recruits in hospitalist medicine, emergency medicine, and specialist roles tied to their Level I trauma center. Focusing your applications on these high-turnover departments increases your odds of reaching a hiring manager who is already familiar with sponsorship workflows.
Clarify Sponsorship Scope During the Offer Stage
When WakeMed extends an offer, ask specifically whether they will file for H-1B cap-exempt status through a qualifying nonprofit or PERM for Green Card sponsorship. Hospitals affiliated with academic or research functions sometimes qualify for cap-exempt filings, which bypasses the annual lottery entirely.
Understand the TN Visa Option If You Hold Canadian or Mexican Citizenship
Physicians who are Canadian or Mexican citizens can pursue TN status for Medical Doctor roles at WakeMed without lottery exposure. The TN requires a job offer letter and proof of your medical degree, and it can be renewed indefinitely in three-year increments at the border or port of entry.
Account for PERM Labor Market Test Timelines When Planning
If WakeMed initiates PERM sponsorship for a Green Card, DOL requires a formal labor market test that typically takes six to eighteen months before an I-140 petition can be filed. Build this into your employment planning so you are not caught between visa status expiration and an unfinished PERM process.
Use Migrate Mate to Track WakeMed Medical Doctor Openings
Medical Doctor roles at WakeMed that include visa sponsorship are not always flagged clearly on general job boards. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for WakeMed physician openings that confirm sponsorship eligibility, so you are only investing time in applications aligned with your immigration needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does WakeMed sponsor H-1B visas for Medical Doctors?
Yes, WakeMed sponsors H-1B visas for Medical Doctor roles. As a nonprofit health system, WakeMed may qualify for cap-exempt H-1B filings depending on the affiliated entity, which means physicians are not necessarily subject to the annual lottery. Confirm the specific filing pathway with WakeMed's physician recruitment team during the offer process, as cap-exempt eligibility depends on the employing entity.
How do I apply for Medical Doctor jobs at WakeMed?
Applications for Medical Doctor positions at WakeMed go through their physician recruitment portal, and most roles require a current CV, board certification or eligibility, and ECFMG certification for internationally trained physicians. Use Migrate Mate to identify WakeMed Medical Doctor openings that explicitly support visa sponsorship before investing time in the credentialing and application process.
Which visa types does WakeMed commonly use for Medical Doctor roles?
WakeMed sponsors H-1B visas as the primary work authorization pathway for physician roles, and also supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship for long-term hires. TN status is available for Canadian and Mexican physicians. F-1 OPT and CPT are less common for fully licensed Medical Doctor positions but may apply during structured training transitions.
What qualifications does WakeMed expect for Medical Doctor positions?
WakeMed requires a medical degree from an accredited institution, completion of a U.S.-based or ACGME-equivalent residency, and ECFMG certification for internationally trained physicians. Board certification or active board eligibility in the relevant specialty is standard. Active North Carolina medical licensure, or eligibility to obtain it, is required before you can begin employment.
How long does the sponsorship and hiring process typically take for Medical Doctors at WakeMed?
From offer acceptance to start date, expect three to six months for H-1B transfer or new filing, longer if PERM sponsorship is involved. Physician credentialing and hospital privileging at WakeMed runs parallel to the immigration process and can add sixty to ninety days. Starting both tracks simultaneously after an offer is confirmed reduces overall delay.
