Who's Hiring

Construction Intern Jobs in Chicago: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a construction intern job in Chicago?
Target general contractors working on Chicago's ongoing Loop redevelopment, River North high-rises, and city infrastructure programs, along with civil engineering firms tied to CDOT and the Chicago Department of Water Management. A strong edge comes from coursework in structural or civil engineering, familiarity with AutoCAD or Revit, and any hands-on project experience, even from coursework. Applying directly through contractor career pages and university co-op partnerships with Chicago firms moves candidates faster than broad job boards.
Which companies hire construction interns in Chicago?
Companies currently hiring construction interns in Chicago include Burns & McDonnell, AECOM, and EXP, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Chicago's market is anchored by large regional general contractors, civil engineering consultancies, and municipal project partners that consistently bring on interns for multi-year urban development and infrastructure work.
Are there remote construction intern jobs in Chicago?
Yes, but they are uncommon since most construction intern roles require on-site presence for fieldwork, inspections, and project coordination. About 100% of construction intern openings tied to Chicago are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, and those positions tend to involve design support, estimating, or project documentation rather than active site work. Firms with large Chicago office operations occasionally offer hybrid arrangements for desk-based tasks.
How can I get a construction intern job in Chicago with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through Chicago-area university co-op and internship programs, particularly those with established pipelines into city contractors and public works agencies. Employers including municipal subcontractors and regional engineering firms regularly hire first-year interns for documentation, takeoffs, and field observation support. Building proficiency in industry software like Procore or Bluebeam and volunteering on Habitat for Humanity Chicago builds or campus construction projects strengthens an application when direct experience is limited.
