Construction Superintendent Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a construction superintendent in California?
Most construction superintendents in California enter the role through a combination of field trade experience and progressive site management responsibility rather than a single state-issued license. The California Contractors State License Board licenses general contractors, and many superintendents either hold or work toward a Class B General Building Contractor license. A degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a related field strengthens candidacy, as do certifications from the Construction Management Association of America.
How much do construction superintendents make in California?
Construction superintendents in California earn a median of about $133,160 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $82,100 for the lowest 10% to over $211,970 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire construction superintendents in California?
Employers hiring construction superintendents in California right now include Swinerton, Kiewit, and Suffolk Construction, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's volume of public infrastructure, healthcare campus, and large mixed-use development projects means both national general contractors and regional specialty firms maintain consistent superintendent hiring throughout the year.
Which California cities have the most construction superintendent jobs?
The cities with the most construction superintendent openings in California are Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco. The Los Angeles metro drives the largest share through its sustained multifamily, commercial, and entertainment infrastructure pipeline, while the Bay Area's density of tech campus and life sciences projects keeps hiring strong there, and Sacramento's public works and state government construction programs anchor demand in the Central Valley corridor.
Are there remote construction superintendent jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Construction superintendent work is fundamentally on-site, requiring direct oversight of crews, inspections, and daily field operations. About 6% of construction superintendent openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those postings typically involve pre-construction planning, estimating support, or multi-project oversight roles where some administrative work can be done off-site.
How can I get hired as a construction superintendent in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a field trade role, project engineer position, or assistant superintendent title with a California general contractor. Large firms such as Turner Construction, McCarthy Building Companies, and Swinerton run structured associate project manager and field engineer development programs in California that are designed for candidates without superintendent experience. Building toward a California Contractors State License Board Class B license while working on-site demonstrates serious intent and accelerates advancement.
