Control Electrician Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a control electrician in California?
Becoming a control electrician in California typically starts with completing a state-approved apprenticeship through the California Division of Apprenticeship Standards, often run by IBEW locals or independent programs, followed by journeyman certification through the California Department of Industrial Relations. Most employers also expect demonstrated PLC and automation skills, which candidates can build through community college programs at schools like Sacramento City College or Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, or through manufacturer-specific training.
How much do control electricians make in California?
Control electricians in California earn a median of about $76,160 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $46,800 for the lowest 10% to over $140,340 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire control electricians in California?
Employers hiring control electricians in California right now include Apple, Eaton, and Mainspring Energy, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of semiconductor manufacturers, food processing plants, and energy utilities means consistent openings across a broad range of industries throughout the state.
Which California cities have the most control electrician jobs?
Los Angeles, Sunnyvale, and San Jose have the most control electrician openings in California. The Bay Area's density of semiconductor and tech manufacturing firms drives strong demand there, while Los Angeles draws volume from its large industrial and utility base, and Sacramento benefits from state infrastructure projects and regional energy operations.
Are there remote control electrician jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. About 14% of control electrician openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of most control electrician work. The portions most likely to allow remote or hybrid schedules are programming, system design, and documentation tasks rather than on-site installation or troubleshooting.
How can I get hired as a control electrician in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is enrolling in a California Division of Apprenticeship Standards-registered apprenticeship, where you earn while learning on real job sites. Large California employers and IBEW locals in Los Angeles and the Bay Area regularly accept apprentice applications, and community colleges such as San Diego City College offer pre-apprenticeship programs. Candidates who cross over from electrician helper, maintenance technician, or instrumentation tech roles gain a meaningful edge, especially with any exposure to PLC platforms or low-voltage wiring.
Where can I find and apply to control electrician jobs in California?
You can find and apply to control electrician jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring across the state right now. Search the listings, find the roles that fit your experience and location, and apply directly to the ones that match.
