CPT Accounting Jobs
Accounting CPT roles are a natural fit for students in accounting, finance, and business programs because the work directly mirrors coursework in auditing, tax, financial reporting, and managerial accounting. Employers ranging from public accounting firms to corporate finance teams hire CPT students as interns or staff accountants, and authorization comes from your DSO rather than USCIS, making the process straightforward once you have an offer letter.

How does accounting work qualify for CPT authorization?
CPT requires a direct connection between the job duties and your enrolled curriculum. For accounting students, roles involving financial statement preparation, tax return work, audit support, accounts payable and receivable, or managerial reporting all satisfy this requirement. Your DSO will review the offer letter and confirm the connection to your program. The stronger the overlap between the job description and your current coursework, the smoother the authorization process.
Can I do CPT at a public accounting firm while still taking classes?
Yes, and public accounting firms are among the most active CPT employers for accounting students. Part-time CPT, which allows up to 20 hours per week during the academic semester, is the most common arrangement. Some firms structure internship rotations around the academic calendar, and busy season roles during tax season or audit cycles can align with semester breaks, which allow full-time CPT without affecting your class schedule.
Does full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility if I work at an accounting firm?
It can. If you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT across your program, you lose eligibility for OPT entirely. Part-time CPT, regardless of duration, does not affect OPT. Most accounting students use part-time CPT during semesters and limit full-time CPT to summer or winter breaks to preserve their OPT for after graduation. Talk to your DSO early if you are planning multiple CPT authorizations.
What types of employers typically hire accounting CPT students?
The four large public accounting firms, regional CPA practices, corporate accounting departments, financial services companies, and nonprofit organizations all hire CPT students regularly. Corporate roles in accounts payable, financial planning and analysis, and internal audit are particularly accessible because the duties map cleanly onto standard accounting curricula. Government agencies and university finance offices also hire CPT students in accounting support roles.
Where is the best place to find accounting CPT jobs?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international students and filters job listings by work authorization type, making it straightforward to find accounting roles open to CPT candidates without sorting through listings that require permanent work authorization. Beyond Migrate Mate, your university's career center often has employer relationships with local CPA firms that actively recruit CPT students, and attending campus accounting society events can surface roles before they are posted publicly.
