CPT Teaching Jobs
Teaching CPT roles are a natural fit for graduate students in education, curriculum and instruction, educational psychology, and TESOL programs, where classroom-based or instructional work is a core component of the degree. Many programs require a supervised teaching practicum as part of the curriculum, making CPT authorization straightforward to document and secure through your DSO.

How does teaching work qualify for CPT authorization?
CPT must be directly tied to your academic program, and teaching roles qualify when your degree program includes coursework in pedagogy, curriculum design, instructional methods, or a required teaching practicum. Graduate students in education, TESOL, educational psychology, and curriculum and instruction programs typically have the clearest path to CPT approval because classroom teaching is explicitly part of the degree. Your offer letter from the employer and a letter from your academic advisor connecting the role to your coursework are usually sufficient for your DSO to authorize CPT.
Can I do a teaching CPT job part-time while taking classes?
Yes, and part-time CPT (under 20 hours per week) is the most common arrangement for teaching roles during an active semester. Many schools, tutoring centers, and after-school programs are accustomed to hiring part-time instructors and can structure hours around your class schedule. Full-time teaching CPT is available during summer or winter breaks without affecting your class load, but keep in mind that accumulating 12 or more months of full-time CPT across your entire program makes you ineligible for OPT after graduation.
What types of employers offer teaching CPT positions?
K-12 schools, community colleges, tutoring and test-prep companies, after-school enrichment programs, language learning centers, and educational nonprofits are among the most consistent sources of CPT teaching placements. University academic departments also hire graduate students as teaching assistants or instructors, which often counts as CPT when structured correctly. Some curriculum development roles at edtech companies qualify as well, provided your DSO agrees the work connects directly to your degree program.
How do I get CPT authorized for a teaching role?
Start by getting a written offer letter from the employer that describes your specific role, responsibilities, and the dates and hours of employment. Bring that letter to your DSO along with documentation showing how the role connects to your academic program, such as a course syllabus, a program requirement statement, or a letter from your faculty advisor. Your DSO will update your I-20 with the CPT authorization, which is typically issued within a few business days. You can begin working only after the CPT start date listed on your updated I-20, not before.
Where can I find teaching CPT jobs?
Migrate Mate is the recommended starting point for F-1 students searching for CPT-eligible teaching positions, as the job board is specifically built for international students and filters roles by work authorization type. Beyond that, your university's career center and education department often maintain partnerships with local schools and tutoring organizations that have hired CPT students before. Reaching out directly to education programs, community learning centers, and language schools in your area can also surface opportunities that are not widely posted online.
