Does a Business Intelligence internship qualify for CPT?
Yes, if the role connects directly to your degree curriculum and your DSO approves it. A BI internship covering SQL, data visualization, or analytics engineering typically qualifies when your program includes coursework in those areas. The position must be a required or elective component of your curriculum, not just professionally relevant, your DSO makes that determination based on your specific program.
Can I do full-time CPT for a Business Intelligence role during the academic year?
Yes, but full-time CPT during the academic year requires your DSO's approval and carries a consequence: 12 months or more of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, doesn't affect OPT. Most BI employers who hire CPT students during the semester structure the role as part-time to protect students' post-graduation options.
What documentation does a BI employer need to verify my CPT authorization?
Your employer needs a copy of your CPT-authorized I-20, which lists the employer name, position title, and authorization dates. Some employers also request your current visa stamp and I-94 record. The employer-facing requirement is straightforward, the authorization lives entirely on your I-20, so there's no separate USCIS filing or employer petition required for CPT.
How do I find Business Intelligence jobs where employers are comfortable with F-1 CPT?
Search Business Intelligence roles on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers with documented F-1 hiring history. Companies that have sponsored F-1 students before, particularly those enrolled in E-Verify or with active H-1B visa LCA filings in data and analytics roles, process CPT onboarding without the back-and-forth that comes from employers unfamiliar with F-1 work authorization.
Does the SOC code for my BI role affect my CPT or OPT eligibility?
The Standard Occupational Classification code matters most for OPT, not CPT. For STEM OPT extension purposes, BI roles typically fall under SOC codes 15-1211 (Computer Systems Analysts) or 15-2051 (Data Scientists), both of which appear on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program list. Confirm your employer's intended SOC code before signing an offer if you plan to use STEM OPT after CPT. You can cross-reference job duties against O*NET occupation profiles to validate the classification.
