CPT Energy Jobs
Energy CPT roles span renewable power, oil and gas, grid operations, and energy policy, fields where your DSO must confirm the work ties directly to your degree program before you start. Many positions require security background checks or E-Verify enrollment, so confirm those requirements before accepting an offer.

Get Access To All JobsEnergy CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I do CPT at an energy company that requires a security clearance?
CPT authorization itself doesn't prevent you from applying for a security clearance, but most clearances take months to process and require you to already be on-site. Many energy companies with clearance-gated roles offer unclassified projects specifically for CPT students. Confirm with the employer which projects are accessible before your DSO submits the CPT authorization.
Does remote CPT work for energy roles count toward my curriculum requirement?
Remote work is permissible under CPT as long as your DSO confirms the role still satisfies the curricular requirement. The key issue for energy roles is that remote positions in grid operations, data analytics, or energy policy are generally easier to authorize than field-based roles that require physical presence at a plant or drilling site.
How do I find energy employers who are open to CPT students?
Migrate Mate lists Energy roles filtered by employers with documented work authorization filing history, which helps you identify companies already comfortable with nonimmigrant work status. Utilities, renewables developers, and energy consulting firms tend to have more established CPT onboarding processes than smaller independent operators.
What happens if my energy CPT role extends beyond one semester?
CPT is authorized semester by semester on your I-20. If your energy internship runs across multiple terms, your DSO must reauthorize it each semester and confirm it continues to satisfy your academic program. Each reauthorization also counts toward the 12-month full-time CPT threshold that affects OPT eligibility, so track your cumulative hours carefully.
Can I use CPT at a startup energy company with no prior international hires?
Yes. CPT doesn't require the employer to file anything with USCIS, your school authorizes the work, not the company. The employer does need to provide an official offer letter with your job title, start date, hours per week, and supervisor name so your DSO can evaluate the curricular tie. E-Verify enrollment is only required if the employer is a federal contractor.
