Get Access To All JobsData Science Director CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Data Science Director role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if the position is an integral part of your degree program and your DSO authorizes it on your I-20. Director-level data science roles typically qualify for students in doctoral or master's programs in data science, statistics, or related fields, provided the job description maps to your curriculum and your school's CPT policy permits work at that seniority level.
Can I do CPT as a Data Science Director while completing my dissertation?
Many doctoral programs explicitly allow CPT during dissertation research when the industry role supports the thesis. You'll need your DSO to confirm the connection between the directorial work and your research focus. Some programs require a faculty advisor co-signature confirming the role advances your academic goals, so check your school's specific CPT policy before accepting.
How do I find employers open to hiring F-1 CPT students for director-level data roles?
Search on Migrate Mate, which filters job listings by employers with documented DOL work authorization filing history. Director-level roles with CPT authorization tend to appear at mid-size technology and analytics firms that hire graduate students for strategic positions. Targeting employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for comparable roles reduces the risk of hitting a sponsorship wall mid-process.
Does working as a Data Science Director on CPT affect my OPT or STEM OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, so track your cumulative CPT hours carefully. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, doesn't count against OPT. Because director roles often carry full-time expectations, clarify the weekly hour commitment with your employer and DSO before your CPT authorization is issued.
What should I include in my CPT authorization request for a Data Science Director position?
Submit the formal offer letter specifying job title, employer name, start and end dates, and hours per week. Your DSO will also want a written explanation of how the director-level responsibilities, such as overseeing data strategy, managing analytics teams, and reporting to executive leadership, connect to your specific degree program requirements. The more precise that connection, the faster your I-20 update is issued.
