Get Access To All JobsCommercial Real Estate CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Commercial Real Estate internship qualify for CPT?
Most CRE internships qualify if your school's program includes real estate, finance, urban planning, or business coursework that the role directly supports. The work must be an integral part of your curriculum, not just tangentially related. Your DSO makes the final determination, so bring the job description and map duties to specific courses before your appointment.
Can I work for a CRE brokerage on CPT, or does the employer need a special authorization?
CPT authorization sits entirely with your school, not the employer. The brokerage doesn't file anything with USCIS. Your DSO issues an updated I-20 authorizing the specific employer. The firm does need to onboard you lawfully, which typically means completing Form I-9 and verifying your CPT-endorsed I-20 as your work authorization document.
How do I find Commercial Real Estate employers who are open to hiring CPT students?
CRE firms that have sponsored international employees before are your strongest leads. Use Migrate Mate to identify employers in commercial real estate with active DOL Labor Condition Application filing history. That data shows which firms have navigated international hiring before, making them far more likely to understand CPT onboarding requirements and complete Form I-9 correctly.
Does full-time CPT in a CRE role affect my future OPT?
Yes. If you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT, you lose your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, doesn't count toward that limit regardless of how many semesters you use it. If your CRE role runs across multiple semesters, structure it as part-time to protect your post-graduation OPT.
What documents does a CRE employer need from me at onboarding for CPT?
You'll need your CPT-endorsed I-20, your passport, and your F-1 visa stamp. The employer uses these to complete Form I-9 under List A verification. Some CRE firms also request your SEVIS ID for their records. Your CPT authorization on the I-20 must show the correct employer name, start date, and part-time or full-time status before your first day.
