Does a Commercial Director role actually qualify for CPT?
Yes, if your degree program, typically an MBA, MS in Management, or a business-focused engineering program, includes coursework in strategy, commercial operations, or leadership that the role directly applies. Your DSO evaluates whether the placement is an integral part of your curriculum, not just related to it. The offer letter's description of your responsibilities is the document that carries the most weight in that evaluation.
Can I do CPT as a Commercial Director on a full-time basis?
You can, but full-time CPT carries a significant consequence: any CPT authorization of 12 months or more on a full-time basis eliminates your eligibility for OPT entirely. Part-time CPT, under 20 hours per week, does not affect your OPT clock regardless of duration. If you're planning a post-graduation work strategy that depends on OPT, discuss the format of your CPT with your DSO before you sign the offer.
What should a Commercial Director offer letter include for CPT authorization?
Your offer letter needs to state the employer's legal name, your exact start and end date, your weekly hours, the job title, and a description of your duties that reflects the strategic and operational scope of the role. Generic language like 'business support' won't satisfy most DSOs. The description should reference functions like revenue strategy, cross-functional leadership, or market development, whatever your curriculum directly supports.
How do I find employers open to hiring F-1 students on CPT for Commercial Director roles?
Migrate Mate lists employers with CPT-compatible hiring histories, which saves you from pitching companies unfamiliar with F-1 authorization. Focus on mid-size to enterprise companies with established HR infrastructure, they're more likely to have handled DSO paperwork before and won't slow-walk the offer because CPT is new to them. The O*NET profile for this occupation also helps you frame your role description in terms that resonate with both recruiters and DSOs.
What happens if my CPT end date passes while I'm still in the role?
Working past your authorized CPT end date is a status violation, even by one day. You must request a CPT extension from your DSO before the current authorization expires, extensions require a new I-20 reflecting the updated dates. If you're in a semester break or your program is ending, confirm with your DSO whether continued CPT is permissible and what enrollment requirements must stay in place to maintain your F-1 status.
