Internship Term: Fall (September 14 - December 18)
Commitment: Full-time
Location: Onsite in Somerville, MA
Application Requirements: A portfolio of your previous engineering work/projects is required
The Job
- Design, build, and innovate new 3D printing techniques - from developing new printer architectures to validating minute changes in galvo control
- Work across teams to help implement improvements to current products such as redesigning support structure algorithm based on experiment results
- Evaluate current printer performance for areas for improvement
- Design and execute experiments and use results to inform and develop improvements in software or hardware
- Tackle complex and open-ended problems across multiple engineering disciplines
You
- Are willing to question assumptions and back it up with data
- Are able to work autonomously to research
- Have experience with experiment design and data analysis
- Understand programming and scientific computing, ideally Python or Matlab
- Are familiar with mechanical design, mechatronics, CAD modeling, and hands-on prototyping
- Previous work on a consumer product
- Developed physics-based models of complex systems

Does R&D Engineer work qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the research and development work directly integrates with your enrolled curriculum. Your DSO will require a written explanation of how the role connects to your specific coursework or degree requirements. Roles involving applied research, prototype development, or technical experimentation in your field of study typically qualify, provided your program formally incorporates practical training as a component of the curriculum.
Can I work part-time as an R&D Engineer on CPT while taking classes?
Yes. CPT can be authorized as part-time, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, allowing you to work alongside your enrolled coursework. R&D Engineer positions structured around a specific project or lab rotation often accommodate part-time schedules. Your DSO authorizes the hours on your I-20, and you can't exceed what's listed without a new authorization.
How does full-time CPT in an R&D role affect my future OPT eligibility?
Twelve or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, regardless of total duration, doesn't affect OPT. If you're pursuing a multi-semester R&D co-op or internship, structure it carefully with your DSO before accepting. Many students in engineering programs opt for alternating part-time and full-time semesters to preserve their OPT for post-graduation H-1B visa cap-gap coverage.
What documentation do R&D employers need to onboard a CPT student?
Your employer needs your CPT-authorized I-20, which lists the employer name, work start date, end date, and whether it's part-time or full-time. The employer name on the I-20 must exactly match the hiring entity. R&D positions at companies with subcontracting arrangements sometimes create mismatches here, so confirm the legal employer name before your DSO submits the authorization.
