Get Access To All JobsCorporate Development Manager CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Corporate Development Manager role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your school's DSO can tie the role directly to your enrolled program. Corporate development work in M&A analysis, strategic planning, or partnership evaluation maps well to finance, business administration, and management degree requirements. Your program must require or offer academic credit for the practical training, and the job description needs to document duties that align with your coursework.
Can I work full-time as a Corporate Development Manager on CPT?
Full-time CPT is allowed but carries a consequence you should understand before accepting: 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, does not affect OPT. For a competitive role in corporate development where you're targeting H-1B visa sponsorship after graduation, preserving your OPT window is worth structuring the engagement carefully.
What documents does my employer need to provide for CPT approval?
Your DSO typically requires a signed offer letter or internship agreement that specifies your job title, employment start and end dates, weekly hours, worksite address, and a description of your duties. For a Corporate Development Manager role, the duty description should name specific functions such as financial due diligence, deal sourcing, or integration planning, not just a generic title. A vague offer letter is the most common reason DSO requests get delayed.
How do I find Corporate Development Manager roles where employers understand CPT?
Migrate Mate lists Corporate Development Manager positions at employers with experience hiring F-1 students on work authorization. Focusing your search there reduces time spent on companies unfamiliar with CPT mechanics. Beyond that, target employers in financial services, private equity, and large technology companies, where dedicated HR teams handle F-1 work authorization regularly and the corporate development function is established enough to structure a defined internship.
Does CPT employment count toward H-1B sponsorship eligibility later?
CPT itself does not count as H-1B qualifying experience, but the skills and employer relationships you build during CPT directly affect your post-graduation sponsorship prospects. Many F-1 students use CPT placements to convert into full-time offers that come with H-1B sponsorship. USCIS evaluates H-1B petitions on the specialty occupation definition and the employer's filing, not on prior CPT history.
