What Product Management Is Like At Gusto
Our Product team is lean, which means you’ll have a high degree of impact and ownership. We believe in smaller, empowered teams that move quickly with less overhead. You’ll move fast by pairing sharp product judgment with fluency in AI tools — automating what slows teams down and amplifying what makes them creative and high-performing.
We’re boundaryless builders. Lines between roles are intentionally blurred, and our PMs do whatever it takes to deliver outcomes. You’ll prototype, automate, design, and ship — using AI as your co-builder to turn problems into durable solutions that deliver customer value with urgency and care.
We’re here to serve small and medium businesses. Gusto has a strong mission-driven culture, and we care deeply about lifting up these business owners — building technology for an AI-first world that gives them the superpowers to run and grow their businesses with confidence.
We’re comfortable with change. Our environment moves fast, and PMs here thrive in ambiguity — blending curiosity, experimentation, and AI-native craft to shape how products (and work itself) are built at Gusto.
About The Team

We have ambitious plans to become the most efficient platform for accountants to deliver payroll & advisory services to their clients and help millions of small businesses as a result. If you enjoy uncovering & solving big customer problems, making complex things simple, and identifying new ways to delight and disrupt workflows with AI, we’d love to hear from you.

Lead product discovery to uncover/deeply understand customer problems and test risky assumptions
Create a long-term vision and strategy that defines the big problems we can solve well with durable competitive advantage
Build iteratively to quickly prove out hypotheses and test new concepts, always looking for ways to get stronger signal on new ideas
Partner closely with Engineering, Design, and Data Science on all stages of the product development process
Rapidly execute and iterate with an emphasis on user delight, impact, and learning. Regularly take risks and make calculated tradeoffs
Balance hands-on building with strategic storytelling that creates clarity and real value for the users we serve
* Define, measure, and improve key product and business metrics, especially in foundational areas like payroll task coordination, roles & permissions, reports, and other day-to-day workflows that are core to our users’ operations
Here’s What We're Looking For

Strong product discovery and analytical skills
The ability to tell a compelling story that drives alignment and inspires action
Strong collaboration skills; ability to quickly build trust with teams and customers
A passion for helping small and medium size businesses
A strong POV on building products in the age of AI; experience building AI-driven features is a big bonus

Where do PMs at Gusto work?
We have offices in Denver, San Francisco, and New York and have remote team members across the US and Canada. We are actively hiring for the New York office. Our open roles will specify on the careers page and in the job description where the position is eligible for work.
Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale. Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas. When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required. This includes non-office days for hybrid employees.
Our customers come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it makes our company stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for small businesses, you will find a home at Gusto.

Gusto considers qualified applicants with criminal histories, consistent with applicable federal, state and local law. Gusto is also committed to providing reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities and disabled veterans in our job application procedures. We want to see our candidates perform to the best of their ability. Get Access To All JobsNew Product Development CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does my new product development CPT job have to match my exact major?
It has to be directly tied to your enrolled program, but an exact major match isn't always required. A supply chain student interning on a product launch team can qualify if their DSO determines the work integrates with coursework. The DSO makes that call, so discuss the role description with them before you sign the offer letter.
Can I do CPT at a startup working on hardware or consumer products?
Yes. CPT authorization is based on the job's connection to your curriculum, not the employer's size or type. Startups are eligible as long as the company is a legitimate legal entity and the position is documented with a formal offer letter. Many early-stage product companies actively seek F-1 CPT students because the hiring process is faster than H-1B visa sponsorship.
How do I find new product development employers who understand CPT?
Migrate Mate lets you filter for employers with Labor Condition Application filing history, which is a reliable indicator that a company has hired international students before and understands the authorization process. Targeting companies with this track record reduces the back-and-forth with HR over what CPT documentation they need from your school.
Does full-time CPT in a product development role affect my OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT used for 12 months or more eliminates your post-completion OPT eligibility entirely, per USCIS rules. Part-time CPT, regardless of duration, has no effect on OPT. If your product development internship runs a full year or longer, you'll need to plan your post-graduation work authorization strategy without relying on OPT.
What job titles qualify as new product development for CPT purposes?
Your DSO evaluates the actual job duties, not just the title. Roles like product development engineer, innovation analyst, R&D associate, and commercialization intern typically qualify when the duties involve design, testing, or launch activities tied to your program. Review the O*NET occupation profile for your target role to identify the standard duties and confirm the match with your DSO before applying.
