Get Access To All JobsHR Director CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does CPT work authorization cover strategic HR Director duties, or only entry-level HR tasks?
CPT authorization is tied to the scope your DSO approves, not the job title itself. If your program covers strategic workforce management, compensation design, and organizational development, your DSO can authorize a CPT position that includes those director-level responsibilities. The key is demonstrating in writing that the duties directly support your current curriculum, not that they match an entry-level profile.
Can I work as an HR Director on part-time CPT during the academic semester?
Yes. Part-time CPT is capped at 20 hours per week while classes are in session, and your DSO must authorize the specific position before your start date. HR Director roles with part-time hours are less common, but some employers structure them as consulting or project-based engagements that fit within the 20-hour limit. Confirm the arrangement in writing before your DSO files the CPT authorization.
How do I find HR Director roles where the employer already understands CPT authorization?
Search Migrate Mate for HR Director openings and filter by employers with established LCA or H-1B visa filing history. These companies have already navigated work authorization paperwork before, which means less time spent explaining CPT to a recruiter who has never encountered it. Prioritizing this subset of employers significantly shortens the offer timeline.
Does 12 months of full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility after graduation?
Yes. If you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT, you lose your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, regardless of total duration, does not count toward that threshold. If you're planning to use OPT for H-1B transition after your HR Director CPT role ends, track your full-time CPT hours carefully and discuss the running total with your DSO before each authorization.
What documents does an employer need to provide to support my CPT authorization for an HR Director position?
Your employer typically needs to supply an offer letter that specifies job title, duties, start and end dates, hours per week, and work location. Your DSO may also request a brief description of how the role connects to your program of study. Some schools require a formal training agreement signed by both parties. Collect all of these before your authorization request, since missing documents are the most common reason DSO approval is delayed.
