Does a Commercial Lead role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your degree program includes coursework in business strategy, marketing, or sales management and the role's duties directly apply those subjects. Your DSO must document the curricular connection in your I-20. Roles with vague commercial titles benefit most from a detailed employer job description that maps responsibilities to specific courses.
Can I do full-time CPT as a Commercial Lead without affecting OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, has no impact on OPT. If you're planning to use OPT after graduation, structure your Commercial Lead CPT as part-time or keep cumulative full-time CPT under 12 months across your program.
What documents does my employer need to process CPT paperwork?
Your employer needs a copy of your valid I-20 showing CPT authorization, your EAD is not required for CPT, and your visa and passport for I-9 verification. Some employers also request your SEVIS number. E-Verify enrollment is required for STEM OPT but not mandatory for CPT, though many larger employers run it anyway.
How do I find Commercial Lead roles where employers are familiar with CPT?
Search Migrate Mate for Commercial Lead openings filtered by employers with documented work authorization experience. Employers who've sponsored F-1 workers before are less likely to withdraw an offer when you explain CPT. Roles posted with explicit visa sponsorship notes are a strong signal the hiring team won't be caught off guard by your authorization status.
Is a Commercial Lead role at a startup a realistic CPT option?
Yes, but startups often lack an HR team familiar with I-9 and CPT procedures. Before accepting an offer, confirm the company has processed an F-1 worker before or is willing to consult with their legal team. Your DSO can authorize CPT regardless of employer size, but the employer must still complete the I-9 correctly to keep you in lawful status.
