Does a Regional Property Manager role qualify for CPT?
It can, but the connection to your major must be explicit. Programs in Real Estate, Business Administration, Urban Planning, or Hospitality Management typically support this qualification. Your DSO will require you to show how portfolio oversight, financial reporting, or operations management in the role integrates with specific courses in your curriculum, not just your degree field.
Can I do CPT as a Regional Property Manager if the job requires travel across multiple states?
Yes. CPT authorization covers your employment regardless of where the work occurs within the U.S., so multi-site travel doesn't create a separate authorization issue. Your I-20 lists the employer, not a work location. Confirm with your DSO whether your school tracks work location changes, as some require an updated training plan if your primary site shifts significantly.
Will using 12 months of full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes. If you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT, you lose OPT eligibility entirely, including the STEM OPT extension. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours or fewer per week, does not count toward this limit regardless of duration. F-1 students targeting H-1B visa sponsorship after graduation should weigh this tradeoff carefully before accepting a full-time CPT position.
How do I find Regional Property Manager employers who will work with CPT students?
Search on Migrate Mate, which filters employers by LCA filing history in property and facilities management. This identifies companies already familiar with work authorization processes, making them more likely to understand CPT requirements. Larger real estate investment trusts and national property management firms tend to have HR infrastructure equipped to handle F-1 documentation.
What job duties on a Regional Property Manager offer letter satisfy CPT's integral requirement?
Duties tied to financial analysis, lease negotiation, vendor contract management, or operational reporting connect most directly to business and real estate curricula. Generic language like 'oversee properties' is weaker than 'analyze NOI performance across a portfolio of 500 units.' The more the offer letter mirrors your coursework terminology, the easier DSO approval becomes. Ask your employer to be specific about analytical and managerial responsibilities.
