People Business Partner CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a People Business Partner role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your degree program directly covers HR strategy, organizational behavior, labor relations, or workforce development. Your DSO will check that specific job duties map to your coursework, not just your degree title. Roles focused on generalist HR operations or business partnering on talent strategy typically satisfy that requirement for students in HR, business, or industrial-organizational psychology programs.
Can I do CPT for a People Business Partner role at a company that hasn't hired international students before?
Yes. CPT authorization is issued by your school, not the employer. The employer doesn't need prior experience hiring international students or any USCIS filing history. They do need to provide a formal offer letter and agree to your authorized hours. You can find employers open to CPT students on Migrate Mate, where you can filter by companies with verified HR-role hiring activity.
What happens to my OPT if I use full-time CPT for more than 12 months in a People Business Partner role?
Using full-time CPT for more than 12 cumulative months eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, including the STEM extension. Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, doesn't count toward that threshold regardless of duration. If your program requires a multi-semester People Business Partner placement, discuss a part-time CPT structure with your DSO before committing to full-time hours.
Do People Business Partner CPT roles typically lead to H-1B sponsorship after graduation?
People Business Partner roles qualify as specialty occupations under the H-1B visa because they require at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field. Whether a specific employer sponsors H-1B depends on their history and willingness. Checking an employer's LCA filing record before accepting a CPT offer gives you early signal on post-graduation sponsorship likelihood.
How specific does my offer letter need to be to get CPT authorized for a People Business Partner role?
Your DSO needs enough detail to confirm the role is integral to your curriculum. At minimum, include the job title, a brief description of duties, your supervisor's name and title, the work location, your start and end dates, and whether the position is part-time or full-time. Vague descriptions like 'HR support' are frequently flagged. Ask your recruiter to use task-specific language from the job posting.
