Get Access To All JobsData Integration Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Data Integration Engineer role qualify for CPT authorization?
It qualifies if the work is directly tied to your enrolled curriculum. Data Integration Engineer duties, building ETL pipelines, connecting APIs, managing data warehouses, typically map to graduate coursework in database systems, cloud computing, or data engineering. Your DSO makes the final determination, so bring course descriptions that mirror the job duties to your authorization meeting.
Can I do CPT with a part-time Data Integration Engineer position?
Yes. CPT can be part-time (under 20 hours per week) or full-time (20 hours or more). Part-time CPT doesn't affect your OPT eligibility. Full-time CPT for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT entitlement entirely, which matters if you plan to apply for OPT or STEM OPT extension after graduation. Clarify your hours with your DSO before accepting the offer.
Which employers hire F-1 CPT students for data integration roles?
Companies that file Labor Condition Applications for data engineering SOC codes and are enrolled in E-Verify are your strongest targets. These employers have already worked through DOL wage compliance and are set up to onboard F-1 students without delay. Migrate Mate filters employers by LCA filing history so you can identify which companies are actively hiring for these roles.
What happens to my CPT if my employer changes my job duties mid-internship?
Your CPT authorization is tied to the specific employer and role your DSO approved. If your duties shift substantially, from pipeline development to, say, general IT support, your DSO may need to re-evaluate whether the position still qualifies. Notify your DSO promptly if the scope changes and don't assume the original authorization covers a materially different role.
Do Data Integration Engineer CPT roles require H-1B sponsorship to continue after graduation?
CPT only covers work during your program. To continue employment after graduation, you'd typically move to OPT or STEM OPT, then H-1B sponsorship if the employer files a petition. Data Integration Engineer roles fall under specialty occupation definitions that H-1B covers, but your employer needs to file with USCIS before your OPT or STEM OPT authorization expires.
