Get Access To All JobsTraining And Development CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Training and Development internship automatically qualify for CPT?
Not automatically. CPT requires the work to be an integral part of your curriculum, which your DSO determines on a case-by-case basis. A Training and Development role qualifies only if it ties to a specific course, practicum, or degree requirement in your program. A general internship with no curricular connection does not meet the standard, regardless of how relevant the duties seem.
Can I do part-time CPT in a Training and Development role while taking a full course load?
Yes. Part-time CPT is defined as fewer than 20 hours per week and does not affect your full-time enrollment requirement. Many Training and Development positions, including instructional design projects and training coordination roles, lend themselves to part-time schedules. Your I-20 will specify the authorized hours, and you cannot exceed them without a new authorization from your DSO.
Will using CPT affect my OPT eligibility later?
Part-time CPT, no matter how many semesters you use it, does not reduce your OPT eligibility. Full-time CPT used for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. If you plan to pursue OPT after graduation, track your full-time CPT usage carefully and discuss the tradeoff with your DSO before accepting any full-time CPT position in Training and Development.
How do I find Training and Development employers who are open to CPT students?
Migrate Mate lets you search Training and Development roles filtered by employers with work authorization filing history, which helps you focus on companies already familiar with F-1 work authorization. Look for mid-size organizations with established HR or Learning and Development departments, as they typically have internal processes for onboarding international interns and are more likely to have someone who understands CPT documentation requirements.
What documentation does an employer need from me to start a CPT job in Training and Development?
Your employer needs your updated I-20 showing CPT authorization, your F-1 visa, and your passport. The I-20 must list the employer name, start and end dates, and whether the authorization is full-time or part-time. Some employers also request your I-94 record. CPT does not require an Employment Authorization Document from USCIS, which is one of the practical advantages over OPT for students starting mid-semester.
