Does a Cyber Security Architect role qualify for CPT authorization?
It qualifies if your program includes coursework in security architecture, enterprise risk management, or related frameworks and the role applies those subjects directly. Roles scoped around routine security monitoring or help-desk functions typically don't meet the integral curriculum requirement. Your DSO makes the final determination based on your course history and the employer's written job description.
Can I do part-time CPT as a Cyber Security Architect while finishing my degree?
Yes. Part-time CPT is 20 hours or fewer per week and doesn't affect your OPT eligibility, regardless of how many semesters you use it. Full-time CPT totaling 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, so most students working architecture roles during the school year choose part-time authorization and switch to full-time CPT only during summer or final-semester internships.
What documentation do employers typically need to process a CPT hire?
Employers need your updated I-20 showing CPT authorization for the specific employer, your F-1 visa, and your passport. Some security-focused employers also require E-Verify completion. The CPT authorization on your I-20 lists the employer name, start and end dates, and whether it's part-time or full-time, so those details must match your offer letter exactly before you start work.
How do I find Cyber Security Architect jobs where employers understand CPT?
Search Migrate Mate for Cyber Security Architect openings filtered by employers with LCA filing history in the security and technology sectors. Employers who have filed LCAs for comparable roles have already navigated work authorization compliance processes, which typically means less friction when onboarding a CPT student compared to employers with no prior sponsorship experience.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my job description changes after I start?
If your responsibilities shift substantially, for example from architecture and design work into a primarily operational or analyst function, your existing CPT authorization may no longer cover the actual work being performed. You'd need to return to your DSO with an updated job description and request a revised I-20. Starting work outside your authorized scope puts your F-1 status at risk, so flag scope changes to your DSO promptly.
