Get Access To All JobsInsurance Assistant CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Insurance Assistant role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your school's curriculum includes a practicum, cooperative education, or internship requirement tied to your degree program. Your DSO will verify that the Insurance Assistant duties, such as underwriting support, claims data entry, or client communication, connect directly to your field of study. The connection must be documented before your start date.
Can I work part-time as an Insurance Assistant on CPT while taking classes?
Part-time CPT (under 20 hours per week) is available while you're enrolled full-time and doesn't affect your OPT eligibility. Full-time CPT (20 or more hours) used for 12 or more months eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, so track your CPT hours carefully across all authorized positions, not just your current one.
How do I find Insurance Assistant employers who understand CPT?
Search Migrate Mate for insurance employers with prior LCA filing history, this signals they've navigated work authorization paperwork before and are less likely to withdraw an offer once they see your I-20 requirements. Smaller independent agencies often have less familiarity with CPT than regional carriers or national brokerages.
What documents does an Insurance Assistant employer need from me on day one?
Your employer needs your CPT-endorsed I-20 showing the authorized employer name, position, and dates, plus your F-1 visa stamp and passport for I-9 verification. If the employer uses E-Verify, your CPT authorization on the I-20 satisfies the work authorization requirement without an EAD card. Bring originals, not photocopies.
Does CPT work as an Insurance Assistant count toward licensing requirements in most states?
CPT-authorized work hours are real employment and typically satisfy state insurance pre-licensing work experience requirements, but you'll need to check your specific state's Department of Insurance rules. Your employer may need to submit a supervision attestation. Confirm this with your employer's compliance team before your CPT period ends so you don't lose credit for those hours.
