Can I work a new grad job on CPT before I've graduated?
Yes. CPT is specifically designed for pre-graduation practical training when the work is an integral part of your curriculum. A new grad role authorized under CPT must be tied to a specific course or program requirement, and your DSO must approve it and update your I-20 before your start date. You can't begin working until the authorization is reflected in your SEVIS record.
Does CPT for a new grad role affect my OPT later?
It depends on how much full-time CPT you accumulate. Twelve months or more of full-time CPT eliminates your post-completion OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours or fewer per week, doesn't count against that limit regardless of duration. If you're weighing a full-time new grad CPT position, calculate your total prior full-time CPT hours before accepting.
What documents does my employer need for CPT authorization?
Your employer doesn't file anything with USCIS for CPT. The authorization runs entirely through your school and DSO. What you need from the employer is a formal offer letter stating the job title, employer name, work location, start date, and whether the position is full-time or part-time. Your DSO uses that letter to update your I-20 before you can legally begin working.
How do I find new grad employers who understand CPT?
Many entry-level employers hiring new grads have limited experience with F-1 CPT requirements and may hesitate or ask you to explain the process. Searching on Migrate Mate lets you focus on employers with verified work authorization filing history, which signals familiarity with international student hiring and reduces friction during the offer stage.
Can I do CPT at a startup or small company?
Yes, employer size doesn't affect CPT eligibility. The authorization is school-driven, not employer-driven, so a startup qualifies the same way a large corporation does as long as the role is integral to your curriculum and your DSO approves it. The practical risk with early-stage employers is timeline uncertainty, so get your offer letter and I-20 update before leaving any other opportunities.
