Does aviation CPT work count toward FAA flight hour requirements?
It depends on what the role involves. CPT work in a flight training capacity at an FAA-certificated operator can log toward certain flight hour milestones, but ground operations, dispatch, or planning roles don't generate loggable time regardless of CPT status. Confirm with your program's flight operations coordinator before assuming any CPT position builds toward your certificate or rating.
Can I do CPT at an airline, airport authority, or defense contractor?
Yes, all three employer types are eligible for CPT as long as the role is integral to your aviation or aerospace program and your DSO approves the authorization. Defense contractors often require additional security screening or background checks that can extend onboarding timelines beyond the standard CPT start date, so build in extra lead time when pursuing those roles.
How do I find aviation employers who understand CPT hiring?
Search Migrate Mate to identify aviation employers with documented LCA filing history, companies that have filed for work visas before are far more likely to have HR processes in place for international student onboarding. Regional carriers, aerospace manufacturers, and airport management companies tend to hire CPT students more regularly than smaller general aviation operators.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my internship converts to a full-time offer before graduation?
Your CPT authorization covers only the dates and hours your DSO approved. If you're offered a full-time position before your graduation date, you can't simply extend CPT, you'd need a new authorization request covering the new term, or you'd need to graduate and transition to OPT. Accepting full-time hours without updated CPT authorization is a status violation.
Does completing 12 months of full-time aviation CPT eliminate my OPT eligibility?
Yes. Accumulating 12 or more months of full-time CPT across your enrollment eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, per USCIS regulations. Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, doesn't count toward that 12-month limit. Structure your aviation CPT authorizations carefully if post-graduation OPT is part of your work authorization plan.
