Get Access To All JobsQuality Assurance Tester CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Quality Assurance Tester role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the role connects directly to your degree program. QA Tester positions typically align with computer science, software engineering, information systems, or related majors. Your DSO evaluates whether the specific job duties, not just the title, are an integral part of your curriculum. Bring the job description to your DSO appointment so they can make that determination before you accept the offer.
Can I do CPT as a part-time QA Tester while classes are in session?
Yes. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, does not affect your OPT eligibility regardless of how many semesters you use it. Full-time CPT, meaning more than 20 hours per week, used for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Most F-1 students working QA roles during the academic semester keep hours at or below 20 to protect their post-graduation options.
What documents do I need to start a CPT-authorized QA Tester job?
You need a CPT-endorsed I-20 from your DSO showing your employer's name, the authorized employment dates, and whether the authorization is part-time or full-time. Your employer also needs your I-20 and EAD equivalent documentation for their I-9 and E-Verify records. Confirm with your employer's HR team which documents they require before your first day, since some companies request additional proof of enrollment.
How do I find QA Tester employers who are open to CPT students?
Search on Migrate Mate, which filters Quality Assurance Tester roles by employers with documented work-authorization filing history. Companies that have previously sponsored work visas are significantly more familiar with CPT paperwork and I-9 compliance than those who haven't. Targeting that subset of employers reduces the risk of losing an offer because HR doesn't know how to process your I-20 authorization.
Does CPT experience as a QA Tester count toward H-1B specialty occupation eligibility?
CPT work experience in QA testing can support an H-1B visa petition if the role required and you performed work requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field. USCIS evaluates the nature of the duties, not the CPT label. Keep detailed records of your QA projects, tools used, and the technical complexity of your work. That documentation strengthens a future employer's specialty occupation argument to USCIS.
