Does a Customer Solutions Manager role qualify for CPT authorization?
It can, but your DSO evaluates whether the specific duties tie directly to your degree program. A Customer Solutions Manager role at a technology company requiring systems knowledge, business analysis, or client implementation work has a strong curriculum connection for students in information systems, business, or engineering. Roles that are primarily sales-focused with no technical component may be harder to justify.
Can I do CPT for a Customer Solutions Manager role part-time while finishing my degree?
Yes. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, is available while you're enrolled full-time in classes. Many F-1 students use part-time CPT for Customer Solutions Manager internships during their final semester. Your DSO will need an offer letter confirming the hours, a start date, and the employer's address to update your I-20.
Will a full-time CPT placement as a Customer Solutions Manager affect my OPT?
Full-time CPT used for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. If you plan to use OPT after graduation, keep your CPT to under 12 months of full-time work. Part-time CPT, regardless of how many months you use it, does not affect OPT eligibility at all.
How do I find Customer Solutions Manager roles where employers understand CPT?
Search on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers with documented DOL filing history for F-1 roles. Look specifically for companies in SaaS, enterprise software, or professional services, where Customer Solutions functions are large and HR teams are more likely to have processed work authorization paperwork before. Asking recruiters directly about their experience with CPT students during the first call saves time.
What documents does my employer need before my CPT start date?
Your employer doesn't file anything with USCIS for CPT. The authorization lives entirely on your I-20 and is managed by your DSO. You'll need to provide your employer with your CPT-endorsed I-20 and your F-1 visa documentation. If the employer is enrolled in E-Verify, they'll run your I-9 verification, which is completed using your passport and I-20.
