Get Access To All JobsDirector Head Of CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can an F-1 student on CPT work in a Director or Head Of role?
Yes, provided the position qualifies as an integral part of your established curriculum. Director and Head Of roles in business, operations, or technology can satisfy CPT requirements for graduate students in MBA, management, or related programs. Your DSO reviews the job description and confirms the academic connection before authorizing CPT for the specific employer and role.
What documentation does a Director-level CPT position typically require?
Your DSO will generally need a formal offer letter describing your duties and the employment period, plus written confirmation that the role advances your degree requirements. For Director or Head Of positions, a description of how the leadership responsibilities map to specific courses or program competencies strengthens your authorization request and speeds DSO approval.
Does working in a Director or Head Of role on CPT affect my future OPT or H-1B eligibility?
Full-time CPT used for 12 months or more eliminates your post-completion OPT eligibility, so track your CPT duration carefully. CPT itself does not affect H-1B lottery eligibility. If your Director-level role is at a cap-exempt employer, H-1B visa sponsorship may be possible outside the lottery entirely, which is worth clarifying with the employer's HR or legal team.
How do I find employers willing to support CPT for senior leadership roles?
Browse Migrate Mate to identify employers with established F-1 and visa sponsorship experience who are actively hiring for Director and Head Of positions. Employers already enrolled in E-Verify and familiar with LCA filings are generally more receptive to onboarding CPT students into senior roles, since they have HR processes in place for authorization paperwork.
Can CPT in a Director role count toward specialty occupation requirements for future H-1B sponsorship?
Yes. Time spent in a Director or Head Of role during CPT can demonstrate relevant professional experience when an employer later files an H-1B petition on your behalf. USCIS evaluates whether the role required and you possessed a directly related bachelor's degree or higher, so preserving your offer letter, job description, and performance records from your CPT period supports that future petition.
