ABOUT THE JOB
Topcon Healthcare is looking to offer an internship program from June 1, 2026, until August 14, 2026. This is a paid program located in the La Jolla CA office. The hours for this program are Monday – Friday 9am – 5pm. Come join the Topcon Healthcare team to help build real-world skills and knowledge to influence your education and career path.
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join the Primary Care product engineering team as a product engineering Intern. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience and hands-on exposure to product management, medical imaging software, and regulated healthcare product development, with a particular focus on image quality, system robustness, and software design controls. The intern will work closely with product management, engineering, and quality to deliver meaningful output and products that will benefit patient care. We are committed to offering real, outcome-driven project work—not observational or exploratory tasks.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The intern will support the Primary Care product team across three primary workstreams:
Imaging Quality & Robustness Analysis
- Assist in developing and evaluating image quality metrics for retinal imaging, including sharpness, illumination, field-of-view coverage, and artifact detection.
- Analyze how image quality impacts downstream performance (e.g., AI outputs, interpretability, clinical usability).
- Compare traditional computer vision approaches and lightweight machine learning techniques for assessing image quality.
- Synthesize findings into clear, decision-oriented recommendations for product and data strategy.
Capture Guidance & User Feedback Concepts
- Explore offline methods to detect common capture failure modes (e.g., blur, motion artifacts, poor alignment).
- Support concept-level analysis of how capture guidance or feedback signals might improve usability in non-specialist settings.
- Document tradeoffs between algorithmic complexity, usability, and system constraints.
Software Design Controls & QMS Exposure
- Support product management in maintaining software design documentation within a regulated Quality Management System (QMS).
- Assist with requirements traceability, risk considerations, and verification planning for software-related features.
- Gain exposure to how product, engineering, and quality teams collaborate in a regulated medical device environment.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Currently pursuing (or recently completed) a graduate degree in engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, physics, or a related technical field.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Python and familiarity with data analysis workflows.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to clearly document technical work.
Nice to have
- Exposure to medical imaging, computer vision, or machine learning (e.g., CNNs, ViTs, image analysis).
- Familiarity with PyTorch, MATLAB, or similar tools.
- Interest in product management, system-level thinking, or regulated product development.
- Comfort working with imperfect or real-world data.
BENEFITS:
- Hands-on experience working on a real medical device product used in clinical settings.
- Exposure to the intersection of software, hardware, and clinical workflows.
- Practical understanding of software quality and design controls in a regulated environment.
- Mentorship from experienced product and engineering leaders.
- The opportunity to deliver work that directly influences product decisions and roadmap discussions.
COMPENSATION
- Expected Base Pay Range: $22.00 to $25.00 hourly based on degree level.
The base pay range included is a projected hiring range for a position, level and potential work location(s) listed. Topcon provides the compensation range that it in good faith believes it might pay and/or offer for this position. This compensation range is based on a full-time schedule.
Benefits:
This position is not eligible for benefits or time off.
EEO Statement:
We're an equal opportunity employer. All applicants will be considered for employment without attention to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran, or disability status.

Get Access To All JobsProduct Associate CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Product Associate role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the work is an integral part of your curriculum and your DSO approves it. Product Associate roles typically involve user research, sprint planning, and cross-functional coordination, which map well to graduate programs in product management, business administration, or human-computer interaction. Your offer letter must describe duties that connect directly to a course or program requirement.
Can I work as a Product Associate on CPT before I finish my degree?
CPT is available before graduation as long as your program permits it and the role is tied to a specific curricular requirement. Full-time CPT used for 12 or more months eliminates OPT eligibility, so most F-1 students completing internships or co-ops as Product Associates use part-time CPT or limit full-time CPT to one academic year.
What documents does my employer need to complete CPT onboarding?
Your employer needs your I-20 with CPT authorization on page two, which lists the specific employer name, authorized dates, and whether it's full-time or part-time. They'll also complete I-9 verification using your I-20 and passport. Some employers additionally request a DSO confirmation letter. Make sure your authorized start date on the I-20 matches your actual first day.
How do I find Product Associate roles where the employer understands CPT?
Migrate Mate lets you filter product roles by employers with active DOL Labor Condition Application filing history, which indicates prior experience sponsoring international workers. Companies that have previously hired OPT or H-1B visa employees are generally more familiar with CPT documentation requirements and less likely to rescind offers due to authorization concerns.
Does CPT for a Product Associate role count toward OPT or H-1B eligibility?
CPT itself doesn't count toward OPT, but full-time CPT totaling 12 or more months removes your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT has no effect on OPT. For H-1B purposes, time spent in CPT-authorized employment can count as qualifying U.S. work experience, which is relevant when your employer assesses specialty occupation requirements for a future H-1B petition.
