Get Access To All JobsData Manager CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Data Manager role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the position directly relates to your program of study. Data Manager roles typically qualify for students in information systems, computer science, data analytics, or business administration programs. Your DSO will assess whether the specific duties, such as overseeing data pipelines, enforcing data governance policies, or managing database architecture, integrate with your curriculum's learning outcomes.
Can I do CPT as a Data Manager while taking fewer courses?
CPT requires you to remain enrolled full-time unless your program is in its final semester. Part-time enrollment for CPT is only permitted in a student's last semester if fewer credits are needed to complete the degree. Check with your DSO before dropping below full-time status, since unauthorized status changes can invalidate your CPT authorization and your F-1 status.
How do I find Data Manager employers who are open to CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate for Data Manager roles at employers with prior work authorization filing history. Many Data Manager positions sit inside larger data engineering or analytics teams, so filtering by employers who have consistently hired international candidates in data roles is more reliable than applying broadly and asking about CPT compatibility during screening calls.
What documents does my employer need to know about for CPT?
Your employer needs a copy of your I-20 showing the CPT authorization, including the employer name, authorized dates, and whether the authorization is full-time or part-time. CPT is employer-specific, so if you change employers mid-term, you need new authorization from your DSO before starting. USCIS does not issue a separate EAD for CPT; the I-20 endorsement is the work authorization document.
Does CPT work experience as a Data Manager count toward H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, paid CPT work in a Data Manager role counts as qualifying employment experience if the duties align with specialty occupation standards under USCIS guidelines. When your employer later files an H-1B visa petition, they can document your CPT tenure to demonstrate continuity in the field. Keep offer letters, pay stubs, and performance reviews from your CPT period to support future petitions.
