Get Access To All JobsTechnical Solutions Architect CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Technical Solutions Architect role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if the work is an integral part of your curriculum and your DSO approves it. Most programs in computer science, information systems, or engineering management can support CPT for this role because it applies systems design, cloud architecture, and technical strategy concepts covered in coursework. Your DSO makes the final determination based on how your offer letter maps to your degree requirements.
Can I do CPT for a Technical Solutions Architect role at a startup without a formal HR department?
You can, but smaller employers often lack experience with F-1 documentation requirements. Your DSO will still need a signed offer letter on company letterhead confirming your start date, role, and hours. Some universities also require the employer to complete an additional authorization form. Clarify your school's specific employer documentation requirements before accepting the offer.
How do I find Technical Solutions Architect jobs where employers already understand CPT?
Migrate Mate lets you filter roles by employers with verified F-1 work authorization hiring history, which is a faster path than applying broadly and explaining CPT from scratch in every conversation. Enterprise technology companies and consulting firms that regularly hire F-1 students tend to have established DSO coordination workflows already in place.
Does full-time CPT for a Technical Solutions Architect role affect my OPT eligibility?
Twelve months or more of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, including STEM OPT. Part-time CPT, regardless of total duration, does not affect OPT. If you're planning to rely on OPT after graduation for continued work authorization or an H-1B cap-gap, track your full-time CPT months carefully and discuss the tradeoff with your DSO before accepting a full-time engagement.
What happens if my CPT-authorized role shifts to a different project mid-internship?
CPT is authorized for a specific employer and role scope. If your responsibilities shift significantly, such as moving from systems integration to a pure sales engineering function, your DSO may need to issue updated CPT authorization before you perform that work. Notify your DSO promptly if your role changes rather than waiting until your authorization renewal period, since unauthorized work can affect your F-1 status.
