Does a Talent Acquisition Director role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your academic program in HR, business administration, organizational psychology, or a related field requires practical training as part of the curriculum. Your DSO will assess whether the specific duties of the role, such as leading hiring strategy, managing recruitment teams, or overseeing workforce planning, directly integrate with your coursework. A vague or generalist job description may require clarification from the employer before authorization is granted.
Can I do CPT as a Talent Acquisition Director if my degree is in a non-HR field?
It depends on how closely your program connects to the role. A business analytics or data science degree can support CPT for a Talent Acquisition Director position if the role involves workforce analytics or HR technology. Your DSO makes the final determination based on your program's curriculum, not your personal assessment of fit. Bring documentation showing how the role's core responsibilities align with your required coursework.
Will CPT as a Talent Acquisition Director affect my H-1B sponsorship options later?
CPT itself doesn't affect H-1B visa eligibility, but full-time CPT lasting 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility, which removes one common bridge to H-1B sponsorship. The role does qualify as a specialty occupation under USCIS standards when properly documented, so employers can sponsor an H-1B visa petition directly. Use Migrate Mate to identify companies with a track record of filing H-1B visa LCAs for HR leadership roles before you accept an offer.
What documents does my employer need to provide for CPT authorization at this level?
Your employer must provide an offer letter on company letterhead that includes your exact job title, the employer's legal name and address, your start and end dates, whether the position is full-time or part-time, and a brief description of job duties. For a director-level role, DSOs often expect more detailed duty descriptions to confirm the work is curriculum-integral rather than purely administrative or managerial in nature.
Is a Talent Acquisition Director position typically full-time or part-time CPT, and does that distinction matter?
Director-level roles are almost always full-time, which classifies them as full-time CPT. That classification matters because 12 or more cumulative months of full-time CPT eliminates your post-completion OPT eligibility. Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, does not affect OPT regardless of duration. If the employer offers a reduced schedule that keeps you under the full-time threshold, confirm this with your DSO in writing before your CPT is authorized.
