Does a UX Design internship qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the internship is directly tied to your enrolled curriculum and your DSO approves it before you start. The role must involve UX-specific work like user research, wireframing, usability testing, or interaction design. A general marketing or content role with some design tasks typically won't satisfy the integral-part-of-curriculum standard your DSO applies.
Can I do CPT for a UX Design role at a startup or small agency?
Yes, employer size doesn't affect CPT eligibility. What matters is that the employer is a legitimate U.S. business, the role aligns with your UX coursework, and your DSO can verify the connection. Startups and agencies are common CPT employers in design fields, but confirm E-Verify enrollment if you plan to use STEM OPT after graduation.
How do I find UX Design employers who regularly hire F-1 CPT students?
Migrate Mate lets you filter roles by employers with CPT hiring history in design and technology fields. Because CPT must be pre-authorized by your school, targeting employers already familiar with the process shortens your timeline significantly. Look for roles with explicit UX or product design responsibilities rather than broad creative roles.
Does full-time CPT in UX Design affect my OPT later?
Full-time CPT totaling 12 or more months across your program eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, doesn't count toward that limit regardless of duration. If you're planning to pursue OPT or STEM OPT after graduation, structure your UX CPT authorizations as part-time positions wherever your program allows.
What UX Design job duties support a strong CPT authorization request?
DSOs look for duties that map directly to your enrolled coursework. Strong CPT justifications in UX include conducting user interviews and usability tests, producing wireframes or prototypes, running heuristic evaluations, or contributing to design systems. Duties like social media management or general graphic design won't satisfy the curriculum-connection requirement even at a UX-focused company.
