Get Access To All JobsData Governance Lead CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Data Governance Lead role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your degree program includes coursework in data management, information systems, or compliance frameworks. Your DSO will evaluate whether the role is an integral part of your curriculum, not just a tangential work experience. Roles involving data stewardship, policy enforcement, or metadata governance typically map well to business analytics, information management, or computer science programs. Document the connection explicitly in your CPT request.
Can I work as a Data Governance Lead on part-time CPT while still taking classes?
Yes, part-time CPT allows up to 20 hours per week and keeps your full-time OPT eligibility intact. Many governance lead roles in large organizations have structured project workloads that can accommodate part-time schedules, especially during the scoping or documentation phases. Confirm the weekly hour commitment with your employer before your DSO submits the CPT authorization, since part-time versus full-time CPT affects your future OPT usage.
How do I find Data Governance Lead jobs that accept F-1 CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate for Data Governance Lead openings filtered by CPT-compatible employers. Many governance roles sit in financial services, healthcare, and technology firms that regularly work with F-1 students on CPT. Look for job postings that list data stewardship, data quality, or compliance responsibilities, since those align most directly with CPT-eligible academic programs and are most likely to have a DSO-documentable curriculum connection.
What O*NET occupation code applies to Data Governance Lead roles?
Data Governance Lead positions most commonly fall under O*NET occupation codes for Computer and Information Systems Managers or Database Administrators and Architects, depending on how the employer defines the role. Checking the O*NET profile for your specific job title helps you confirm whether the listed tasks match your coursework, which strengthens your CPT justification when your DSO reviews the role.
Will working full-time on CPT as a Data Governance Lead affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes. More than 12 months of full-time CPT used before graduation eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. If you're planning to use OPT after graduation, and especially if you're targeting STEM OPT for an additional 24 months, track your full-time CPT usage carefully. Part-time CPT, regardless of total duration, does not affect OPT eligibility, so structuring longer engagements as part-time can protect your post-graduation work authorization.
