Does a Business Systems Analysis internship qualify for CPT?
It qualifies if the work is an integral part of your established curriculum and your DSO authorizes it on your I-20 before you start. The job description must connect directly to your degree program, so roles involving requirements documentation, process modeling, or system design fit most Information Systems, Computer Science, or Business Analytics programs. Your department advisor typically confirms academic relevance before the DSO issues authorization.
Can I do CPT at a consulting firm that places me at a client site?
Yes, but the CPT authorization on your I-20 must name the consulting firm as your employer, not the end client. If the consulting firm is your legal employer of record and handles payroll, that satisfies the requirement. Confirm that the firm is enrolled in E-Verify and that the client-site arrangement doesn't change your formal employment relationship before accepting the offer.
How do I find Business Systems Analysis employers who are familiar with CPT?
Migrate Mate shows LCA filing history by employer and role, which lets you identify companies that regularly hire international students. Employers with active filings in Systems Analysis or Business Analysis occupations are more likely to have HR processes already set up for I-20 verification and CPT onboarding, reducing delays on your start date.
Will doing full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility after graduation?
Full-time CPT of 12 or more cumulative months eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, including the STEM OPT extension. Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, doesn't affect OPT regardless of duration. Track your authorized hours carefully across all CPT positions, and ask your DSO to confirm your running total before accepting any new full-time CPT role.
What documents does a Business Systems Analysis employer need from me for CPT?
You'll need to provide your CPT-endorsed I-20 showing the specific employer and authorized dates, your current F-1 visa stamp, and your passport. The employer completes Form I-9 using these documents and enters your information into E-Verify if enrolled. Some employers also request your SEVIS ID and school enrollment verification. Have all documents ready before your first day since you can't begin work without a valid I-9 on file.
