Does a Developer Relations Manager role qualify for CPT authorization?
It depends on your degree program's curriculum alignment. CPT requires the work to be an integral part of your academic program, not just related to your field. If your program includes courses in technical communication, software systems, or developer ecosystems, your DSO can typically authorize CPT for this role. Bring a job description and your course list to the DSO meeting.
What documents do I need to start a Developer Relations Manager CPT position?
You need an updated I-20 with CPT authorization listed on page two, the employer's written job offer or offer letter specifying start date and hours, and confirmation of your enrollment status for the authorization period. Your DSO issues the updated I-20 after approving the CPT request. You cannot start work before the CPT start date printed on the I-20.
How do I find Developer Relations Manager jobs that are open to CPT students?
Migrate Mate filters job listings for employers with CPT and F-1 authorization history, so you're not applying blind to companies unfamiliar with the process. Developer relations roles that recruit CPT students typically appear at developer-tool companies, cloud platforms, and API-first startups rather than traditional enterprise employers.
Does full-time CPT as a Developer Relations Manager affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes, directly. If you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT across your degree program, you lose all OPT eligibility, including the STEM OPT extension. Part-time CPT, defined as under 20 hours per week, does not count against OPT regardless of duration. Discuss the hours structure of any Developer Relations Manager offer with your DSO before accepting.
Can I work remotely as a Developer Relations Manager on CPT?
Remote CPT work is generally permitted, but your I-20 must reflect your current U.S. address, not the employer's address. SEVIS requires your address to be accurate at all times. Some schools also require the employer's location to be in the U.S., even for remote roles, so confirm your DSO's specific policy before signing a remote-only offer.
